Abercrombie Loses A Limb

hot ruehl dude so sad.jpgPoor Abercrombie’s been having a hell of a time with this whole recession thing.

Last winter they refused to cut prices pre-Christmas which led to devastating losses and now, they’ve announced they’re closing Ruehl. A good friend worked at Abercrombie’s Ohio headquarters while Ruehl launched and here’s why, according to her, it bombed:

“At first their product was awesome, it was so different from anything else on the market. But it didn’t catch on immediately (most new things don’t) and instead of giving it a proper chance, they caved to corporate pressure and turned it into just another A&F. If they’d just stuck to the original idea without conforming to the A&F model, it would have made it through this downturn.

They didn’t differentiate themselves from their umbrella brand and you can’t draw an older, brand new demographic with the same merchandise they wore in high school. You can’t use sex to sell to a 29-year-old woman like you do a 17-year-old. Like look at Madewell. J.Crew’s offshoot does so well because it’s completely different from J.Crew - an original idea as opposed to a recycled version of the same thing.

Not to mention, no one even knew what Ruehl was.”

So there you have it. If you wanted to pay extra for your moose-embossed polo you should probably go now, all twenty-nine stores will be closed by the end of the year.

Non fashion comparison but...this reminds me of when some new series on TV gets pulled off air after so little time to find it's footing, and everybody talks about how a lot of the time you have to give a show time to grow, like how Seinfeld's first season started out with okay-ish ratings and then it became...Seinfeld

I just knew it wouldn't last. The one at the mall closest to me always looks empty.

I'm looking at Ruehl's website...and I just don't see a major difference in what they sell at A&F.

It's not different enough for me. Maybe it's because they present it in the same way, but it's not worth keeping a different brand. There was no buzz because it would be publicity for the same product.

The 29 Ruehl stores that are closing have a bulldog logo, not a moose.

As far as I'm concerned, the sooner Abercrombie&Fitch fails the better. They're boring, tired, and sell nothing but a superiority complex rather than fashion. Plus you should really check out the article #2 posted and re-think your title... the company disgusts me.

As far as I'm concerned any company that purposely hires people then tells them to treat customers badly b/c it gives the company some kind of bizarre snobbish cache -- it should fail. I celebrate A&F's troubles. Ive never bought anything from A&F have been in an A&F store I think once in my entire life and am not interested in ever going into one again. Their stuff is a higher end version of the GAP and only an insecure teen desperate to fit in would fall for its ridiculous marketing scheme.

who shops at a&f other than teenagers? seriously, most people above the age of 20 with some taste and enough sense wouldn't buy any of their products

OH! the gay 30-40-something year old gym rats who prey on younger guys like me ALWAYS are thinkin' they're the shit as they stroll through a gay club or bar in an unattractively tight and ugly A&F tee...it seriously baffles me... abercrombie is built for mass appeal to ignorant midwesterners who think a moose is couture...shame on them for buying into it and giving the company the means to take over once beautiful billboards... i'm so glad ruehl is falling...leathermakers from greenwich village my ass...

A year ago, my buying class discussed multiple stores that open a brand at every age level, so they can hold onto their customers as they age. Of course, A&F was discussed.

Being that I hadn't bought anything from Abercrombie & Fitch since middle school, I knew I was out of the loop when I hadn't heard of Ruehl. I live in San Francisco, and I guess the store was somewhat new, so I went and visited.

I am a visual merchandising major, and I can say that the merchandising for that store is awesome in that it is the most complex of the three stores. It transforms you from the second you spot the store, as it sticks out as its own building. (The interior is a bit boring, aside from the beautiful woods and light fixtures.)
BUT! The product looked just like Abercrombie's. Yeah. Bye bye, Ruehl! Not so sad about this one leaving us. The less boring store, the better. ;)

Abercrombie RUNS the mall I work at. I totally agree with you Britt if I wore Abercrobie in High School (which I did and in middle school) I am not going to wear the same product now, 3 years later!! Moving on.

This is just one step closer to the fall of A&F...better yet, I shouldn't even say that. Let those teeny boppers, wanna be younger moms and beefarooni guys who also wear Ed Hardy (or any label crazy mall brands) continue their support of this horrid brand. We'll be able to point them out and laugh.

Feel free to laugh even harder at them when you see them standing on line to get into an A&F store....seriously, how snobbish is that?

I've worked at the Ruehl in San Francisco since it opened in 2007. It's kind of sad to see it go, but it barley does $2,000 days. Officially it's not closing till Jan 31 2010. And during that January they will be doing furniture and fixture sales as well.

I'm curious if they are going to sell all the Bruce Webber photography that's lined throughout the store. That's TBA.

I agree with "good friend" - I worked there at the beginning of Ruehl's conception and it was totally rad and new.... then the blatant logos & felt letters started... the colors became the same... the fits became the same... the fabrics became the same... the silhouettes became the same... you get the picture... sad as I have some wonderful (and uber talented) yet lobotomised friends that work there that will likely lose their jobs.

I used to work at Ruehl back when I was in high school when the company was just starting up. The difference in the product from when they first opened and a couple of months later was insane. I have skirts from their early days I still wear but I wouldn't even consider putting on any of their newer merchandise. This post couldn't be more accurate.

they have some nice stuff at A&F. i don't judge a store (especially those in most malls) by what 99% of the stuff is. I usually try to find the 1% that is good. Plus I know that no one my age (mid 20s) still shops there so no one will be wearing what i am. for example, i got a soft grey v-neck cardi sweater where the moose logo is the same color as the yarn so you can't see it (lol I would not have bought it if the logo was a contrasting color). it was the perfect body length/shaper/arm length that i was looking for. I don't care if it is abercrombie.

although, i wish i had hear about ruehl when it first started. it sounds good.

I agree, when I heard abercrombie had come out with a brand targeting 25 to 40 i laughed a bit. Most people in that age group think they're too sophisticated for abercrombie. If ruehl was going to work they would have to make it a lot different. I think it could have been an amazing brand. Unfortunatly sometimes the balance sheet discourages creativity and risk. Tooo bad :( .

As for abercrombie I dont think its STUPID or whatever everyone says. They do sell some nice clothes and they do look good on a lot of people, ok quality to. The problem with the brand is its become way tooo popular for its own good. I remember I was one of the first kids in my school to be decked in A&F now everyone wears it . I live in Canada too (3 stores in the country). I cant imagin what its like in the US where its in almost every mall
