I think I spent an entire month watching over-the-knee boots march down runways.
From Rodarte in New York, to Pam HoggLondon in and Louis Vuitton in Paris – and about a million in between – they were everywhere, but aside from Lauren Santo Domingo‘s turn in custom-made Brian Atwoods, we’d placed stretchy leather up to one’s butt cheeks in the runway-only category, along with everything sheer from SS09.
I was wrong, of course. Byrdie Bell broke hers out for a party a couple of weeks ago and as fall merchandise creeps its way into stores, we’re preparing for an onslaught. Stuart Weitzman’s square-toed versions, in both suede and leather, hit Shopbop this week and StyleFile is even contemplating thigh high clogs.
I remember the first time I wore almost knee-high leather boots to my suburban Catholic high school and gave everyone a heart attack. Even if this is New York City circa now, I imagine a similar, if not more dangerous reaction with those six extra inches of leather. I love the idea, am obsessed with the look, but I’m pretty sure I’d look like a hooker regardless of what I wear on the rest of my body.
Abby, however, can’t wait to rock a pair. Thoughts?

Yes!!! I also can’t wait, although I understand others’ reservations about them…I think it’s a perfect example of wearing something because you love it, not because it’s a trend. Otherwise, you know, the boots, or whatever piece in question, ends up wearing you. I’m sure there will be other footwear to die for that stays around the ankle. ;)

You should rock them if you love them regardless of what anybody’s thinks. I look like a hooker on acid some times because of my crazy outfits. But then I think yeah f*ck yeah thats what I want to look like. Im still young so its oke to wear things that are a bit risky. Also make sure the rest of your look is descent if you want to play it a bit safer.
Nicolas Ghesqui√®re did this back in Fall 2003 so it’s nothing new.

Yes! I have a pair and they’re super fun! I like to rock my black suede ones with sweater dresses or wooly minis to add a little kick to a more conservative outfit.

Britt I am faced with the same dilemma. I love the look, but It’s a thin line between chic and hooker. I think the key is finding the right way to wear it and wearing it at the right place. Can’t wait to find the perfect pair…

I will totally buy a new pair in the fall, though. Boots are my thing, the higher (both heel and length) the better.

I used to own a patent black faux leather pair from Sacha London (it was the early 90′s) and wore it to death. Of course, I was in my late teens/early twenties…

If you’re worried about looking like a hooker, just avoid the spike heels. Suede is always a good choice. I don’t think anyone will look twice, except in admiration, in NYC– that’s been my experience (I’ve been rocking these for a while). And let me tell you– they are WARM in the winter and make your legs look super long!
Who cares what reaction you get if you are wearing them because you love it and you reacted to them when you purchased it? If you love them wear it. I want the Stella ones. I just know Stella’s faux leather beauties are way beyond my shoe ceiling.
I have suede black ones and i wear them with gray jeans a simple cashmere black v neck sweater. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and classic and look just that: Simple, classic but with an edge.

Are we talking over the knee or thigh high? Cause those are two different things to me and personally I love and rock both. If people are staring I say let them stare. if you’re rocking them tastefully, (Over thin tight jeans, under a long sheer dress, etc) and not with a butt cheek hugging body suit I say GO!
I agree with #17 that if you’re aiming for the anti hooker look, there are very tasteful ways to wear this.
But at the same time, why shy away from something that gives a bit of a hooker vibe? I feel like every trend out there has got a dirty past right now: studs and chains, hooker shoes, cut-outs, booty skirts, mesh, even harem pants originally- (shoulders and 90s, maybe not quite as much).
Looking sluttish depends so much more on the spirit with which you wear it than just the clothing, anyway.

If you throw a faded epaulet or 2, or crest (NOT EAGLE) pin, you start looking very French Resistance rather than hooker. Boys love.
i definitely want a pair, just not in black. no matter what i wore them with, i know i wouldnt be able to get the streetwalker image out of my mind. so if anyone can recommend a gorgeous brown or beige pair, talk!!

yes – i have pair of amazing fiorentini and baker over the knee boots I got last Fall. They have become my staple black winter boot. they look more urban pirate than hooker – kinda rick owens-ish.
britt, i bet you would look amazing with a pair (not patent) that’s just a little bit shorter than some fabric shorts (not too short though, and not denim, i mean more like shorts you might wear at night), and with some sort of top and jacket combination, and a lot of jewelry. that would be perfect on you. in fact, i bet that rogan/target romper you have with a jacket over it would work, too (but maybe with a light colored cardigan under the jacket to break up the dark colors). i suggest either a clutch or an over-the-shoulder bag. send me photos.

I’m with #22 et. al. on this one: the flat heel is key. Then you look more Aeon Flux or Terminator than anything. Tall boots are my first fashion love from childhood, if I could find more pairs that fit over my huge calves, I’d have a whole closet full of them!

I would wear them, could I afford them, but even chain store synthetic versions are out of my price range at the moment. I’m in Australia so there are only a few stores offering these at the moment. They’ll be huge next winter, no doubt.
Just go to Japan.
