Little J may have outlawed headbands on the final episode of Gossip Girl, but we’ve decided her decree applies to just the most Blair Waldorf-like bows.
Mostly because we’re obsessed with the Jennifer Behr rope head wrap on Rose Cordero in this month’s Teen Vogue.
But at $248, it’s a bit outside our accessory budget. So we decided to make our own.
YOU’LL NEED:
-1.5-2 yards of rope
-A thin, plastic headband
-Superglue
-Optional: tea
STEPS:
1. If you’d like your rope to look a little weathered, dip it into a cup of black tea that you’ve let steep until the color’s what you’d prefer. Let dry overnight.
2. Start experimenting with knots. We liked the look of the original but were immediately taken back to our rock climbing days and decided to do a double figure eight knot.
3. Double-up your rope, and fold in half.
4. Take the right ropes and cross them over the left.
5. Loop these ropes back to the right side, by going underneath the rope.
6. Poke the rope through the loop at the top, and pull tight.
7. Move the knot around on the rope, until it is at a place that will lie nicely on your head.
8. Take the headband and put superglue onto it, working in about 2-inch sections. Press the rope down and continue until you reach the end of the headband.
9. Cut the excess rope and superglue the ends to prevent fraying.
We’re pretty sure Little J would let this one slide.

I love that! Buying supplies immediately.
that is pretty awesome. thanks, girls.
I love that! But I am so bad at this type of thing, that I would probably have to buy about $500 worth of supplies before I finally got it right, so I may as well just buy the original–it will be cheaper!
guest #3: really? $500 worth of rope and glue? right..
shut up guest 4. she was clearly just exaggerating to be funny. god why is everyone on this site so snarky and rude?
I love this! Definitely trying it when I get home.
Very cute!
I wonder if there is a more weathered rope, maybe a tougher material?
I don’t know what I’m talking about, but your headband looks adorable!
super cute fashionista! great DIY!
Love it!!! I’m adding this to my to-do list.
Blair actually wore this very Jennifer Behr headband on gossip girl(and it was amazing)… just to make everything clear.
GENIUS!!!!!
toooooooooo cute. thanks for this. love the DIY hints!
I also am DIYing, but I really love the look of the jennifer behr. It’s based on a figure eight, but instead of using 1 or two cords, double tied, there’s the knot, then two cords on either side of the eight strung through the outer loops (these go toward the elastic near the nape of your neck) and then on top of this the eight part wraps inward (with the ends of the knot) to get the 3-4 wraps around the center. I’m starting to think I may need to sew a bit to keep it all in place though… It’s sort of confusing in case you can’t tell!
love the project! i really want to give it a try, if i succeed it’ll look so cute.
p.s. this is the second time where the hands doing the project have a wicked cool manicure. love it!
Neato! This is the best DIY post. Looks easy to make (I hope…) and versitile (all kinds of knots and types of cords). I’m thinking sailor’s knot. Instead of plastic headband I might try elastic band at the back.
at first i thought the tea was for the DIYer to enjoy while crafting
too cute!! and a legit reason to go to starbucks!
Great tutorial! Thank you!
