DIY

Editor’s Note: I know you guys have been dying for DIY’s and the bottom line is we just haven’t had time. After Christmas I was consumed with fashion week, then I was in Europe for a month, then I was doing the site by myself and we’ve been really busy getting Abby in the swing of things. We finally have a full staff with two marvelous interns who couldn’t wait to get DIY’s going again! So now you can look forward to a summer full of crafts. And don’t worry, we’ve heard your Girls Gone Styled pleas and are getting the ball rolling on super fun videos, too. Stay tuned and thanks for being patient!

3.1 Phillip Lim’s always the first to pop up on Style.com’s runway images thanks to it’s numerical start, which means we’ve been obsessing over Tao Okamoto’s pleated white, studded necklace for a few months now.

We haven’t seen anything remotely like it in stores, so we’ve made our own!

What you’ll need:
-A pair of white tights (we used an opaque pair, but sheer work well too)
-Needle, thread, scissors
-Beads (try to find ones that look like studs)
-1 yard of thick, black ribbon

What to do:
1. Lay your tights flat and cut one leg away from the pair (cut off the toe and the waist).

2. Cut down the leg, lengthwise and re-fold the fabric so that the lower layer is a little longer than the top.

3. Tie a knot at the end of your thread and begin a simple, running stitch near the fold of the fabric.

4. After four stitches string a bead.

5. Do another few stitches and gently pull the thread. The fabric should begin to bunch, giving the necklace a pleated look (pull gently, so the thread doesn’t break. Re-threading needles sucks!). Continue to stitch, bead, and pull until you get to the end of the fabric. Tie a knot with your thread, and the hard part is over!

6. Cut your ribbon in half. Take one of the pieces and sew the good side of the ribbon to the beaded side of the fabric and repeat on the other side.

7. Tie the ribbon in a bow around your neck and get ready for compliments.

We also think that this would look super chic in black, so get creative and feel free to mix up your tights and beads.

This might be great with textured tights too! With all the tights and beads out there, the possibilities are endless! Thanks fashionista.

i love it.
i think i will try this but with more bunching and less ribbon.
maybe i'll just make a neck ruffle.

I agree with guest 6. Maybe the sheer tights would bunch/ruffle more?

first of all, that thing is pretty hideous. who wants to wear tights around their neck? i get the concept but it looks so cheap!

and, to play devil's advocate:
"we haven't seen anything remotely like it in stores..."
because if you had, this post would've been an adventures in copyright. instead, it's a DIY and it's TOTALLY LEGIT. right guys?

Though I don't like this one (looks too sloppy), I'm really happy that the DIY's are back! Looking forward to more. Maybe some nice DIY hats for summer?

Ugh. Maybe delegate the DIYs to someone that's actually crafty?
