Moore Should Go For Less

juliannemoore_vogue_july09cover[1].jpgWe at Fashionista are having yet another debate this afternoon. This time, a back and forth over the July cover of British Vogue, which features a heavily made up Julianne Moore. Shot by Alasdair McLellan, the coverline calls Moore “the most glamorous grown-up on screen.”

We all like Julianne (some of us more than others), and we’ve always loved that she’s so fresh-faced - with her beautiful pale skin, freckles and red hair all complementing each other. The “glamorous” make-up used for the Vogue shoot is too heavy for my taste and, dare I say it, verging on Norma Desmond territory. To me, she looks way older than she is.

Both Hollywood and the fashion industry are youth crazy, so it is great to see a beautiful woman over 40 holding her own and still scoring covers. But no one wants to look ten years older than their real age, right? Especially if they biggest line on the cover is “Ageless Style”

Abby, apparently the voice of dissent in the office today, thinks she looks gorgeous. Though she admits to being biased on all matters related to Julianne Moore.

What do you think?

I don't think she looks any older than she is. She looks late-30's IMO, not even in her 40's. I really like the cover, although it looks more like a fall cover (October, November) as opposed to a July cover. That's really the only fault I can find with it.

my only issue with this cover and the makeup is that it is not very fitting for the summer; fall would be more like it. But Julianne looks stunning! She looks "older" but not like an old hag so I don't see a problem.
I always thought she had amazing structure and it's great to see it all defined like this, especially that mouth!
Ageless is right - what a beauty!

i agree with nycshoegal, it does look more autumnal, but redheads always seem that way i think. and i love julianne moore.
but i'm not sure i like american actresses gracing the covers of british vogue. oh well.

She looks ravishing. She's a gorgeous 40-something actress and that's what she looks like. Nothing wrong with that. It's nice to see a sophisticated look for a change.

#6 its more the actress part i don't like. this is just a personal issue i have i think because everyone else seems to love them and see them as fashion icons.
i would love to see maybe less atractive but very fashionable people on covers; maybe museum curators, art director, writers, dancers or even a dentist if they dress well.
i'm more about getting a 'wow i like how they dress' then 'wow, i know who they are' reaction.

but really how many non-american actresses are on the cover of american vogue?

I bought this issue today. When I saw the cover I couldn't belive how bad it was. Lucky I am addicted to Vogue UK or I might of been put off. I think Julianne is beautiful but this cover didn't do her justice, the shoot pics themselves were so much better. Alex Schulman shame on you.

It is very fall but my main issue with it is that the make up looks caked on. She looks like a beautiful sixty year old but she isn't that old! Even on red carpets, without all the photoshopping, she looks ten years younger. Lets see a more natural and effortless Julianne.

since this debate regarding American Vogue started... really, i wonder if Anna W. will ever bring MODELS back to the US Vogue covers? remember those gals that actually do fashion for living? see Vogue Italia, France, Russia, etc. I'm pretty sure British Vogue doesn't have an actress on every cover, either.
Really, when was the last time we had a model on the cover of US Vogue? (not counting those mandatory group model shots once or twice a year)

I think she looks beautiful and not old at all. I love the color story, especially for the pre-fall season. With all that makeup, she still looks decades younger than Cameron Diaz on US Vogue's cover.

lets please not start the models on american vogue conversation that weve had one billion times and that we all already agree on. This is about julianne moore.

I think she looks incredible. Summer, fall, 30, 40, 50. I love it.

I'm a Julianne Moore fan too, but I don't think she is the most glamorus women on screen, and that is one of the reasons I like her she is simple yet uniquely beautiful. While I barely knew who she was in this over I do love love love it, because isn't that what fashion and beauty is all about doing diffrent things playing around with looks etc.

I'm a Julianne Moore fan and for all reason you stated that you "love" her I do too...she's a simple and unique beauty. But I do love this cover, it's kinda what a fashion/beauty cover is suppose to do, make you look twice, make you look harder and make you interested. Hell we are sitting here discussing it therefore the job of UK's Vouge is done! And it's not going to kill her to go ultraglam sometime!

To darcykins:

"but really how many non-american actresses are on the cover of american vogue?"

How about the constant rotation of Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, etc.

I don't see how she looks any older than she really is on this cover. I really don't get this post... I agree with what most had to say about it fitting more for fall than summer but other than that, there's nothing wrong with it. She looks beautiful. Every cover doesn't have to have a safe, "fresh faced" makeup look. She's a woman, and looks like a woman on this cover.

peter, thank-you you are correct, those aren't american born actresses but they are all on american vogue because of their american film presence.

I thought it was great, her freckles were all there, but it was only really the cover where she had heavy make up... anyway, fashion isn't all about seasons anymore, and on top of all this, it's British Vogue, half the country is cold and dark anyway, you gotta cater to that.

not to diverge from the topic or anything but i can't help but relay my utter disgust with this last American vogue cover. Not only is it terrible fashioned (that awful attempt at Meryl Streep circa Out of Africa) but diaz looked old old old- i mean cakey and gross. and to continue my rant further- the green font that dominated the cover. the text color looked like it came right out of the tube and not in a good way...so bring this back to the discussion- yes julian looks older but in a sexy dominating kinda way- she owns that cover while poor cameron basically got schooled by a load of green font

I'd rather they used models but if they use actresses to sell more magazines, naturally they won't use obscure ones.

Magazine editors love the over-done look, which they seem to think is retro. Redheads like Karen Elson get it the most. Karen looks old when they put all that makeup on her, too. I think anyone looks older with too much makeup, but that said, Julianne still looks good, not like Norma Desmond.

I HATE UK Vogue and this cover is an example as to why-the make up is caked on and is unflattering-she doesn't look older than her age which is 48 but she doesn't look good.

I'm not crazy about it, but I don't think she looks older than her age. She would have looked younger (as she normally does) without the dark lipstick though. Dark lips over 30 are tough to pull off.

Julianne is a beautiful woman and I am happy to see a woman over the age of 22 on the cover of British Vogue. I don't mind the fall colors of the cover--it's fashion's thing to look ahead, after all--but I don't like the caked-on makeup look, not to mention the lighting isn't the most flattering. She could have pulled off darker makeup with different lighting or, possibly, a more adept photographer. How it is now is just bad.

Norma Desmond? really? That comment is more dramatic than the makeup, I think. She looks very stylized and formal but terrific and realistic for her age. Better fall-cover look but still lovely.

I think it looks like her, and no this is not alot of makeup. She's just been wearing next to nothing for so long. People don't like redheads in much makeup. They'd rather see them fresh faced and glossed up, but she looks good.

i think she looks great and dont see anything wrong with wearing a dramatic makeup look. I agree the cover was probably done for a cooler season. Personally, I'm tired of the 'fresh' look and appreciate embracing the drama of makeup. there is a time and place for everything. why not get done up?
