Would You Wear The New Mullet?

little js rocking mullet ew.jpgI cannot, for the life of me, figure out why the mullet’s become the hot cut in Hollywood?

I blame Taylor Momsen. She dabbled in mullets late last year. Then Taraji P. Henson inexplicably traded in her chic bob for a neck cape. And now Kristen Stewart? (Yes, we know it’s for a movie, but still.)

Why would anyone with access to the best of the best hair gurus choose to wear a style that’s more redneck than red carpet? And perhaps more importantly, what self-respecting stylist actually thinks this is a good idea for their client? Do they really want to be known as the master of the mullet?

On top of the catastrophe of the haircut itself, it makes any outfit look awkward. Can you imagine Taraji’s mullet topping off that gorgeous white Roberto Cavalli dress she wore to the Oscars? It does the designer a serious disservice because we’re all too busy staring at a loopy hairdo instead of even glancing at the the garment.

Usually when a style takes the celebrity world by storm (the Rachel, the Pob, etc.), it’s because it’s flattering even if you don’t look like a celeb, but I really don’t think there’s anyone, model or celebrity alike, who could pull this look off.

Unless of course I’ve missed the point and it’s supposed to be cool and kitschy? Please tell me it’s not.

so i would also note that the new mullet (this exact same haircut, often with a patch of blond or red somewhere in the back) was very trendy in London street fashion circa 2003-04. i did some hair shows and always told the stylists that they could anything to my hair but no disconnected layers with fringe.

I wouldn't say Kristen Stewart is a "but still". If its for a movie, they're not really doing it to reflect their personal taste or style.

They also cut Taylor Momsen's hair for her "rebel" phase on Gossip Girl. I guess she's been interviewed saying she hates her hair style, so her hair probably doesn't count.

IT'S NOT! I'm not one to shy away from trends and whatnot but this is never going to be acceptable in my book!

I had this hairdo for a bit (compliments of Vidal Sassoon). I actually liked it and got tons of compliments from random strangers.

did Momsen really say she hated it? I hope so. I thought she did it to herself. it does not flatter her or kate gosselin or anyone who has it.

Lord no - I can handle bike shorts and shoulder pads being back, but I can not stand behind mullets. "Achy Breaky Heart" starts playing in my head whenever the word mullet is mentioned. Pure torture!

I think it's that thing pretty, young people do which is all about wearing ugly things just because they can. It's kind of a smug pseudo-ironic, 'look, I can still look cute wearing this piece of crap' two-fingers up to everyone else. The problem is when everyone else tries to copy it. (Ref: legging-jeans, Ugg boots, acid-wash denim etc)

Know the difference -- a shag is completely different from a mullet. How the two ever came to be considered the same is a mystery to me. What Taylor has is a shag.

My college friend cut a mullet after we graduated. I loved it. So I cut a mullet. I kept it up until one day at a rock show, I looked around and saw these myspace emo teenagers with mullets. So I grew it out. I might wait a few more years til I bring it back. :)

#11, ME TOO. MULLETS BETTER NOT COME BACK 'IN STYLE'. Honestly, then we'll know the world has gone mad.

The style in the photo looks more like big bangs and shoulder-length hair than anything.

I really don't think Taylor looks too bad. Not the mullet from the eighties or the ones rocked at the trailer park so what's the big deal. I kind of like it.
