Back In Black at Valentino

Thursday, Jul 9, 2009 / 10:53 AM

valentinocouturesashap.jpgDesigners Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli took some serious hits from critics after their first couture showing in January.
But the press seems to have warmed a bit to the collection they presented yesterday in Paris.
There is definitely a new vibe at the house. While an occasional bow did make an appearance, the looks were dark, almost entirely black. And for the most part very short and sexy. There were no splashes of color and definitely no Valentino red to be found.
I will admit to not being the biggest Valentino (the clothes, not the man) fan in town, though I’ve always had a great appreciation for many things about the line. But this collection actually speaks much more to my personal taste. I think it looks young and hot and current.
Carlos Souza is going to be able to take this collection and run with it…all the way to Hollywood.
What say you about Valentino’s new direction?

It’s funny that Valentino is one of the few houses that could do a largely black collection and that would be shocking. It’s fresh and interesting here, because it is unexpected and not a fallback color. I particularly liked the sheer pieces in the beginning, I would looove to have one of those in my closet. The silver dresses were really beautiful too.

AMAZING

I don’t think Couture should look young and hot and current, because then it would be RTW. Couture shouldn’t be targeted toward a young demographic considering that the people who are actually buying couture probably aren’t young, hot or current.

Love it. But yeah, agree with 3 above. I think the only people who would be buying this are the hot young Russian housewives and the rich oil guys for their mistresses. Same target market as Balmain, perhaps?

BORING, TIRED, and DERIVATIVE. Such a knock off of Alexander Mcqueen spring/summer 07 collection. Not impressed at all. Should have kept fechetti, her clothes for the house were amazing. In fact the whole fall 10 couture collections were a luckluster except for lacroix of course.

i really loved it, though I dislike that it wasnt very Valentino. They should stick to the style of the house;
This collection seemed too generic, to me it feels like it could have been chanel, or even givenchy… if they dont stick to their dna then it just becomes like every other house… and whats the point in that?

I personally think they should have stuck with Facchinetti- I’m really not very impressed with this collection. However, I would still kill for the gown in pic #2.

I agree with number 6 about this couture season being a bit of an anticlimax however i do think that the Valentino collection was probably the best one. It’s chic, sexy and eventhough there is no “red” is very Valentino. I also don’t agree that the couture show shouldn’t be targeted to a young audience, couture is a dream and it should not have any specific age in mind.

Agree with 6. This was a terrible collection. I would never guess it was Valentino if I didn’t know beforehand. They should have kept Facchinetti. Atleast she had an understanding of what the Valentino house was known for, and could design beautiful yet flattering pieces.
And the complete lack of the trademark red gowns… I was heartbroken.

I have to say I was pretty surprised at the collection – it was pretty grand indeed.
