People Are Talking

The Body’s Body

ellemcphersonatjaguarlaunch.jpgLondon tabloids are currently in a right uproar - not over Posh, or Lindsay, but yes, Elle MacPherson. And all to do with the look she turned up wearing a couple weeks ago to the new Jaguar launch.

Now dubbed “Queen of the Cougars” (in close contention with Madonna and Kylie Minogue), Elle sent the dailies over the edge when she appeared in a custom made Herve Leger gold dress and Loubie heels.

The irony was, when I first saw the dress, my main concern was whether Elle was ripping off Kate Moss’s gold one shouldered dress from the Met ball. The tabbies were concerned about two different things altogether:

1. Whether a woman pushing 50 should be wearing a teeny tiny gold dress

2. Whether her knees passed muster. (They say not)

On close inspection, we must admit, we thought Elle looked like she squeezed herself into that dress - one size up wouldn’t have hurt. And she does seem as if she’s trying hard, way too hard. Her feet also looked like they were poured into her shoes, which underscores another point: peep toe shoes don’t do anything except accentuate bunions or a bad pedicure. Dowager feet - ewwww.

Indeed, the last time anyone had wrinkly knees under such scrutiny, it was another famed actress. We won’t name names, but one whose husband is prone to Twittering and appearing on lame MTV shows - and she got a knee lift.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

I'm guessing #1 doesn't like it because of the close and (perhaps in that commenter's opinion) unforgiving (although I think that if someone dresses themselves a certain way then they are open to any criticism of its fit and appearance) scrutiny it is paying to a middle aged woman's body. Or it could be something else, I dunno.

FYI That dress isn't custom made it's Herve Leger by Max Azria look 15 (Style.com) SS 2009.

She looks great! It's Elle she doesn't try to be cool or fashion. But she wants to show off her hard body! That confidence should be applauded!

In general, I don't mind the slightly bitchy undertones in fashionista posts, but this is really over the top. Saggy knees? Dowager feet? An endorsement of liposuction? Low blow. Is fashionista seriously going to join the tabloids in their hyper critical judgments of a middle aged woman's body? Way to focus on the fashion guys.

I'm extremely disappointed: I would have thought that Fashionista would be above this type of trashy tabloid post. There is already so much misogyny and ageism in fashion, why perpetuate this???

i dont care whether theyre being mean etc... what i would expect would be some links or quotes from those magazines, or a bigger jpeg of the picture so we don't have to google it ourselves. oh and giving the true facts about being custom made or not would have helped, even a google image search shows otherwise.

this post is disgusting. wow, seriously? and how does this relate to this bloody website anyway? yeah that dress sucks, but her knees and bunions? what has gotten into you? what is this turning into Dr. 90210?
p.s. there is NOTHING wrong with peep toe shoes - if the size is right and the heel height is not twisting your foot into a painful cramp (note to self, Louboutin).

That Charley B. tosser ought to be banned from posting another thing on here. and i'd also like to know if Charley is male or female.

How about do we have any thoughts on her ignorance on feminism and body image issues, Fashionista.com, as displayed here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/jul/23/question-time-elle-macpherson. Seriously. That would be a serious discussion that I would be proud of having on my blog, and about as directly related to 'fashion' as this discussion is. Come on now.

That said, I love her lingerie line, it's so elegant but sexy. (I do wish she made anything bigger than a C cup. Even nice slender female paratroopers have bigger boobs than that.)

The dress: okay, everyone has a different opinion when it comes to fashion. However, the harsh criticism about Elle's body was completely uncalled for. She's more fit than most women half her age. I'm 22 and would love to trade legs with this woman! Bunions? I love Fashionista normally, but I did not enjoy reading this post.

Regardless of whether Charley B. is a male or female, this post is an unnecessary addition to the site.

I come here for fashion news- not to read about a supermodel getting bashed for sagging knees and bunions. It's gross that fashionista would support this kind talk. There is no hope for the rest of us if Elle McPherson isn't beautiful enough for you people. I hope I age half as gracefully as she has.

she looks amazing and Charley B. ... you're just hating on her because you know you'll never look like that at any age.
In addition we know the Herve would never make a custom dress for you either. So until you have a resume that can even come close to competing with Ms. Macpherson's, report on news you're capable of, such as where and when sample sales are happening.

Hi this is Charley B -- I am wondering if anyone read the post? I am not saying I agree with what the Daily Mail has been saying, I am reporting on whats been going on here. When i first saw all the brouhaha i was mystified -- her knees did look fine to me, what I did think however that she looked like she needed the next size up. And, NOBODY looks good in peep toes. That is just an opinion.

What I was looking for was an opinion on whether fashionista readers agreed or disagreed with what the tabloids are saying.

But it is a fashion issue -- dresses, bodies, shoes, etc -- how can a body not be a fashion issue? After all, Alaia did one famously say that the "body is the best accessory" and hey, its integral to fashion. If anyone out there thinks that people dont get surgery or work on thier bodies to fit into dresses like that, they are deluding themselves.

Also, though that dress looked off the rack, it was custom made with a different fabric to her specs. That is directly from the PR not me.

One post who got it right is that there is no way I look as good as Elle-- I wish! I wasn't trying to say that-- so everybody just chill, read the post, and comment on the issues on hand, not me -- don't take it so personally!

there you can find pictures of her looking fairly fierce, sans "wobbly knees," in her non-custom herve leger.

See how bad you look right now, in your 20's? Imagine how much worse you're going to look in 20 years. Oh right, you can't, because denial is the only way you can survive.
Don't hate Elle because she's old enough to be your mom, and she looks better than you ever will.

I think her body is great. Not for that dress.

I am not "ageist" or anything of the like. I am a hippie who grew up with midwives. LOL. I hate judging on appearance as do I hate Brussels Sprouts.

But I don't like skanky dresses, and I especially don't like skanky dresses on women old enough to be my mother. If it ain't appropriate on someone my age, it is DEFINITELY not appropriate on you.

I'm pretty sure almost every comment here is missing the point of the original question.

Yeah Charley B I have to agree with commenter #34, the original post is extremely tacky and you haven't defended yourself effectively. In fact your defense is hurting your cause. The idea that women's BODIES are an accessory, is not something that anyone- let alone a mostly women's fashion site should be endorsing without serious inquiry and soul searching. "Some male designer said it, I'm just repeating it, thats what fashion is" is not a defense when most of your readers are real sized women with real lives who have wide ranging relationships with our bodies and with fashion. Some of us get surgery, some of us do not, some of us see our bodies as enemies, some as temples, some as machines, or all 3 on different days, and of course, so much more. But I would hope and I think that most of us are searching for bodily self acceptance and self love and respect for what our bodies can do and have done for us - for many decades- no matter what their size, and relationship to cosmetic surgery. Thoughtlessly echoing tabloid culture in treating cosmetic surgery as normal and breaking women's bodies down into disembodied parts to be judged as in a cattle fair, as you did in this post, simply does not fly. And frankly, you should be GLAD that fashionista readers hold you to a higher standard. It speaks to the intelligence of your readership and effectiveness in fashionista's brand positioning as a smart, 'insidery' site that goes behind the scenes and doesn't just take fashion at face value. If I were you, especially in these times when competition for pageviews and readers is fierce , I would take that brand positioning more seriously, rather than telling your readers to be less serious.
