Miley and Elle

miley-cyrus-elle-august-2009-03.jpgIt’s pretty clear that Elle is skewing its cover choices a bit younger lately. While we’re huge Gwen Stefani fans, we weren’t at all psyched about Megan Fox.

And perhaps even less so about Miley Cyrus, here on the August cover. Though at least we can appreciate how incredibly famous she is, whether we like it or not.

The fact that we don’t hate the picture is actually throwing us off, big time. We’ve never seen Miley’s hair and makeup look so subdued. She actually looks rather lovely, don’t you think?

But don’t you worry, she’s still the same girl we love to mock.

This is one of the excerpted quotes released in which she talks about her Wal-Mart line with Max Azria: “The jeans are my favorite part of the entire line. Because, like, literally this is going to be good for, like, Middle America, and it will be great for kids that really want to be in fashion but that don’t have it available.”

We feel right with the world again.

Maybe it's just me...but Miley Cyrus is a HELL of a lot more interesting than Scarlett Johannsen or Natalie Portman or Keira Knightley or any of those other girls that act exactly the same and bore me to tears. Yes, Miley is younger than Elle's core demographic but she's accomplished so much. And I think everyone can learn at least something from a teen superstar. I can't wait to get this issue.

i haven't even read this yet but i already barfed on my desk.
take miley off the god damn magazine covers! is she even 18? i think the rule should be no under 18 little girls posing for grown up magazine covers. not to mention she is hideous.
i was able to understand her as teen vogue choice but for chrissakes !

Some of my favorite models wouldn't be able to grace any covers if that rule was put into motion. I like Miley by the way she is much more interesting than Scarlett Johannsen ,Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley as guest one said i"d much rather prefer an Emma Watson cover but to see Miley in high fashion should be awesome.

That's a lot of boob to show for someone her age. Although, she is 16 we need to keep in mind that there are very young girls who look up to this girl. Models who are the same age are not being marketed towards 10 year olds by Disney. Of course this is much better than her Vanity Fair shoot in terms of skin showing. Blech.

Am I the only one who completely skips the "articles" about the Hollywood actresses/pop sensations and flips desperately to the editorials? Honestly, Drew/Natalie/Sienna/etc., how much could have possibly transpired in your life since, what, last year when you featured?

These people are already overexposed (figuratively and, unfortunately, literally). We've seen them in their movies, we've seen them on ET, we have seen photos of then drunkenly stumbling out of nightclubs. Why should we want to see them photoshopped to death in designer gowns, attempting to pose like models?

Why you gotta be a bitch?

Max Azria's most well known for BCBG, not exactly fashion with a capital F... Obviously whatever collaboration she does with him will target the Miley demographic and not the fashion crowd. Not every girl dreams of wearing high fashion and that's okay... there's obviously a market for those girls too. And while Elle is a fashion magazine, a lot of those girls do read it.

She just turned 16 for crying out loud... Think of how you were at that age, add millions of screaming fans and international celebrity, and give her a break. She may not be Fashion, but she's not stale.

A lot of people have accomplishes more productive things than Miley. This is like Vogue and Blake Lively wtf?Let's go back to real models who are far more prettier and more suited to have magazine covers or at least a classy, elegant actress that wont make the covers look like a high school journalism student did it.

Gotta be honest here Fashionista, Miley's quote totally age appropiate and as far as her line goes she's right! It is a great oppertunity for kids with less money to have fun with fashion. I don't see any difference between this and the Target one-offs you guys love. So what Miley had a hand in picking some details? We all KNOW that it was team of trained designers who actually did the designing! If it's cute I'll rock it with zero shame!

You people are all seriously deluded. You are just like the people on the fashion spot - obsessed with models and say things like "attempting to pose like models" what makes you think that a model is more qualified than a celebrity to pose? Modeling isn't a qualified profession - pluck a skinny Russian from behind mcdonalds counter and put her in a couture gown and she will be no different to anyone else who does the same.

You need to regain your focus. I too was once obsessed with models and kept going on about how models should be on the covers. But who wants to read about models? They are boring and have no personality because they do nothing. They just pose and sit around all day and then they get out of modeling they find that their faces have sagged and that they never really had anything. You people are all so superficial. Get over your little facades of "I'm such a fashion person" because no one cares about your opinion about yourtheories on modeling and posing and trying to speak in fashion talk because it makes you look stupid.

I never do read the celebrity articles now that I think about it but that is usually because the actresses are boring and I'd love a good mix of famous people and models on American magazines but....... I guess I'm lucky to get the rare Rihanna, Olsen Twin, or Miley Cyrus whom I'd love to see on Vogue Italia shot by Mr.Misel, that would be amazing!!!!!!!!

While I definitely DON'T think Miley is more interesting than someone like Natalie Portman and while I am no fan of her work [despite really wanting to see the Hannah Montana Movie for some reason...never did btw :(], I'm not mad AT ALL at Elle for putting her on the cover. She's gonna help sell some issues! If I were in charge of making sure I pushed issues off the racks, I'd try and put someone on the cover that would most likely do so. With everything going on w/ Miley, she's bound to have some people outside of the fashion world pick up this issue.

I think sometimes people need to stop being so damn snobbish.

Scarlet johansen, keira knightely, cameron diaz, sienna miller, and et al are not in the slightest interesting, because they are too busy falling into facade that they are all so artistic, and that they are like poets, and want to talk about meaningful things like poetry, and life discovery. I do not want o read that ,how boring! I want to read something that is fun and something that isnt just about "me me me, i like going to the ritz to eat some lobster and steak tartare', or have people wave their riches in my face, talking about their priveliged life. I would rather hear from someone who is like miley who just speaks their mind and is motivating

I completely agree with you, #29. If I, like, read about Miley, I would, like, pick up the latest issue of Teen Beat. The interest that I used to have in reading Elle began to dwindle over the past year, and after seeing this cover that will never change. But we'll let Miley have her fun. She'll have her 15 minutes of fame and then spiral into obscurity just like her father.

even though i'm not a fan, i don't mind that she's on the cover of elle, which happens to be my favorite fashion rag. i'll probably skip the article anyway. i'm accustomed to either seeing the same celebrities or celebrities i could give a rat's ass about.

Guest #1...are you on glue? Natalie Portman is a Golden Globe winning, Academy Award nominated actress with a degree from Harvard. To suggest that she is "exactly the same" as any other actress" AND not as accomplished as Miley Cyrus is a joke of epic proportions. I feel silly even addressing it....that said, I do prefer to see models on the covers and throughout the magazine, but if there has to be an actress featured, give me a talented, stylish SMART one like Natalie...

natalie IS boring. shes a decently intelligent girl, but lets not pretend she got into harvard solely on that. she's a movie star. that rap thing she did was funny, but she doesnt really stand out from the others (more down to earth and intelligent though, yes). miley is spunky and a slight change of pace who has A LOT going on. not to mention, most of the actresses kinda suck at acting...

24, alot of models do take some kind of classes to teach them how to pose, walk etc, so in that sense, yes, they are more qualified then a celeb.

and for me, fashion is a passion. i love reading about all aspects of that world. and that includes models. fashion magazines weren't started to focus on a select group of actresses. thats what entertainment and movie magazines are for. do you think the people who cherish those magazines would be pleased if models suddleny started popping up on their covers and the actors and actresses had to start playing second fiddle?

Okay, how about this all magazines stop putting the SAME celebrities on the covers month after month after month. taylor swift on the cover of seventeen this month, the cover of vogue that month, the cover of who knows what the month after that. how about being original? everyone already knows enough about gwen stefani, natalie portman, kiera knightly. and yes, we all know enough about miley as well.

but how about magazines start putting new people on their covers, people who aren't already more rich and famous than then know how to deal with. they've done the whole cover thing over and over and over. i'd like to see some NEW faces.

and yes, i agree that miley probably wasn't the best choice for the elle cover, but she HAS accomplished a lot in her lifetime, so she isn't someone who you should be 'mocking'. lets just maybe wait a few years for her to be gracing elle covers, yeah?

I thought Elle was a fashion mag!
so what the hell is Miley Cyrus doing on this cover, neither is she good-looking nor very fashion-forward, what she does it sell. to 8 to 14 year olds. definitly not ELLE´s target group. at least I thought so. Hope she doesn´t get on the Vogue or Harpers Bazaar, honestly, I´d hate that!
I think COMMERCE WINS OVER ART is exactly how you could describe this whole mess.
I, for myself have started boycotting every magazine even featuring a disney star´s NAME on the cover. And, I´m 16.
