People Are Talking

MObama Clothing Fatigue

michelleobamamoscow.jpegI personally have been a full-fledged member of the What’s Michelle Wearing posse like so many others. Though I have lots of fashion-obsessed friends who are either over it, or were never into it in the first place.

Turns out the Russians don’t really give a damn either. The Obamas trip to Moscow was not covered in the same way that their European trips have been. Translation: next to zero local coverage of the First Lady’s attire.

There may just be a touch of Cold War mentality lingering as Irina Mikhailovskaya, the former editor of Elle Russia, told WWD, “It’s part of our state policy: America is our enemy, and everything about America is bad.”

Another theory raised is that her clothes are just too boring and conservative to interest the more Elie Saab, sparkly-minded Russians.

Or maybe they’re just sick of hearing about every single thing the woman puts on and find our fascination with it just a bit silly.

Do you still care (or did you ever) about what Mrs. Obama is wearing?

I love Michelle Obama; but, if I have to read one more "Oh my god, Michelle Obama shops her closet!" or any other story like that on The Cut I might rip my eyes out.

Very often in ill fitting and too tight dresses and skirts.
Actually, very often a fashion victim, but no one dares comment to that effect!

I like what she wears. I find her to be a modern day Jackie O, but like so many others I am tired of hearing about what she's got on. There's more important things to discuss other than who Michelle is wearing today.

or maybe they aren't reporting about the visit at all? The Russian media has really downplayed the entire visit.

Greetings from Russia :). May I offer another theory? We just don't have a tradition of paying attention to first ladies' attire, whoever they are, especially in mass media. I don't read or flip through all our fashion editions or their websites, but when I happen to I see sort-of-lookbooks of actresses, singers, tennis players, or models. On those pages I can remember only one woman involved in politics, and she was Russian, and not a first lady. I don't think there's any (un)officcial regulation here. IMO we are not used to the idea that politician's wife can be interesting herself esp. from the POV of fashion. So it's not about American FL, it's about any FL, ours included :). May be it will change in the (nearest) future, but who can tell?

Never cared. And the dress in the picture above is not flattering at all, as number 2 pointed out often happens. All the hype about her fashion sense is only there because shes young and because everyone thinks obama is amazing-- not because she has actual style.

michelle is fierce. nuf said. michelle has a real black woman's body and is not afraid to show it. the things that caucasian women worry about like a butt looking too big is not a major concern for us. and, i think that is what #2 is saying is that she owns her full hips instead of hiding them. who cares what the russians think bcuz looking at their matchy matchy first lady in her boxy suits it made me love michelle's playful, relaxed, aristocratic housewife look even more. last week she mixed a lanvin top with puma sneakers HELLO!!!that is cool. i'm sorry.

I think Michelle Obama's style is hyped in part because the first ladies that preceded her wore nothing but pantsuits and Michelle does something radical by wearing *gasp* dresses. Plus, she seems informed about fashion since she often favors really cool designers who are not entirely mainstream or well-known.

this is a bit off topic but i just saw a picture of Empress Michiko of Japan in the newspaper; now she is a truly stylish national leader's wife.

#8, you're dead on... Michelle has real (Af-Am) woman's body, and isn't about to go one some silly diet for the media. LOVE HER and love that she supports independent designers!

And who gives a rat's ass about Jackie O? Her style was always a bit too old-money-slumming for me (I will give it up for her "jeans/casual" 70s looks... kind of amazing) but what always turned me off is that she was considered a "great beauty." WHAT? Horse-faced and bad teeth was more like it....

no one said anything about diet! she should just get clothes that arent so tight. and i agree about her comming off as a fashion victim...actually it wouldn't surprise me if she had a stylist.

Mrs. Obama definitely works out and looks fantastic, she does not need to go on a diet and she doesn't have a pot belly. i agree that the extent to which her wardrobe is covered in the media is a little much, but i think people are just excited to have such a chic likeable first family after so many stuffy boring ass white folks in there. i sure am.
