When I heard that Lauren Conrad’s book LA Candy was sitting atop the New York Times Bestseller List for the second week in a row, I may have puked in my mouth a little bit. I haven’t read it and don’t ever plan to do so.
And before you all start in on me, of course, I’m mildly jealous. What writer (and I use that term loosely when it comes to Lauren) hasn’t dreamed of being #1 on that list.
Now, this is not to say that I don’t like to dabble in the chick lit/industry roman à clef genre from time to time. But I want something that if not highly literary, is at the very least juicy!
Gawker may have found just the thing to satisfy that side of myself with Spin, a novel by Lizzie Grubman’s former assistant, with the genius name Robert Rave. You may remember Lizzie from such cultural high points as the infamous Power Girls cover story in New York magazine or, you know, when she rolled over a crowd with her SUV in the Hamptons.
Gawker has some actual manuscript pages. And it looks like Robert is so going there and taking some industry types to task.
We can’t wait to tag along.

I lol when I saw “SUV” in the tags!
and Lizzie Grubman
YES YES YES YES
Conrad’s book seems to be on the Juvenile/Young Adult list, for ages 14 and up. Am I the only one who finds this absolutely hilarious? That it’s not even on the Adult list?
What adult would read her crap? It’s for like high schoolers and/or college freshmen at fashion school!
so i believe this means the New York Times Bestseller List is a load of crap. i had my suspicions but gawd damn. LC is there, huh?
you stole my puke comment. weak.
Actually, I’ve been using that one (along with, well, just about everyone I know) for a few years now. If you’d ever met me, you’d know it (the phrase, not the puke!) comes out of my mouth almost daily. xA
#7 needs to get a grip and back off – you don’t own the English language, or that phrase. I’ve heard a number of people use it, including my own friends. Love your post, Abby.
No, what’s currently topping the NYT fiction bestseller lists is Jodi Picoult and James Paterson. LC’s novel tops the NYT “Children’s Chapter Book” bestseller list, which is considerably different.
That’s a great observation to point out to people, Guest 10. Children’s or Adult Fiction…people should back off. She’s admitted to never writing a book before and had someone help her so what’s so wrong with that? I already enjoy writing but would definitely accept and probably ask for help if I were in a position to publish something.
On a random note…I need to Google this Lizzie woman. The name sounds familiar like no other.
I checked this one out. It’s not too surprising, and the first book’s plot is very familiar to the latest season of the Hills. Yawn. But, it’s only her first book! She signed a three book deal and I’m eager to see where she takes the plot.
Also, I believe Lizzie Grubman does PR in New York. She was on “Power Girls” which came on MTV in 2005.
