Knitting Pretty

wool and the gang scarf kit.jpgWe love Wednesdays, not because it’s almost Friday, but because it’s when Net-a-Porter gets new stuff and we can wake up and wonder how the Balmain jackets and Halston mini-dresses sold out before we’ve even had coffee.

Today, we almost squealed with glee when we saw these DIY scarf kits.

For $85 you get all the Peruvian wool you need to make a seriously chunky scarf in bright fuschia, grey, turquoise, blue or purple. It even comes with new knitting needles and it’s kind of the perfect stuck on the L without a book subway project - though Faran wholeheartedly disagrees with me.

Meanwhile, we hate to introduce another fall shoe option, but these Thomas Wylde biker boots are amazing.

Hmmm...the DIY scarf thing for $85 is a bit extreme. Especially when you can buy great yarn for less, and have an even wider selection of colors.

But, I guess if it feels like $85 worth of yarn, go for it?

I just like the cool packaging. Very cute.

Actually it's $150 on their website. I'd hope that any knitter would know this is insane. $150 (or even $85) for the privilege of knitting a garter stitch scarf out of seriously overpriced wool? You could do the same with undyed wool a pack of kool aid to dye it whatever bright color you choose for $10. Lame.

This packaging is cute, but you can get yarn at Michaels or Walmart for like $5. And if the packaging is that important, you could make the little bag yourself with construction paper and Sharpie. Britt, save your money for those cute biker shoes.

Yeah, #3 I saw that pattern and was like...
This is it?

$85 is not worth it.

A VERY easy pattern. I suggest someone going to Lion Brand Yarn, finding the same pattern, cheaper, but still extremely comfortable yarn, and get to work.

Sorry my dear but I must agree with faran...you can buy a merino wool/cashmere blend yard for under $10 a ball. Figure 2 balls for a scarf plus knitting needles and you can DIY your own DIY kit for about $30. You could probably find hand-painted wool for much cheaper and certainly more unique than the pricey kits.

As a devoted knitter, I have to agree: The price is ridiculous. You can get super-chunky yarn at JoAnn's (I think it may be Lion Brand) and just knit in stockinette for a couple feet and sew the ends together. This would be a lot more interesting if the pattern were pretty or more intriguing. But I doubt many people would go for that scarf if it just came as the finished product. It's so boring.

However, I do salute more people learning to knit. It's enjoyable and satisfying and even empowering. (Sounds silly, but it's the crafter frame of mind.)

Also, a tip: Look for the 40 percent-off coupons in mailers and Sunday ads. And most major craft chains take competitors' coupons.

My family is from Peru and you can get a great looking cardigan made from 100% baby alpaca for less than that in Cusco. Also I buy my yarn in Lima when I travel there and it doesn't even cost 4 dollars per spool.

i'd have to agree that the kit is expensive... you can buy needles and yarn for less than that and get free directions on how to make a scarf. (like from your grandmother. thats how i learned how to knit:) )

That is an INSANE price to pay for one set of needles, yarn and a pattern to make a very basic garter scarf. You'd have to be a total idiot to pay that price.
