The Searing Skyline

slide_2112_27536_large.jpgThe old adage is that sex sells.

Certain brands—Calvin Klein, American Apparel and Emporio Armani—often bank on the appeal of skin for their notorious billboards. The CK jean-clad orgy (which has now been replaced by the slightly tamer scene of Doutzen Kroes in a red bikini) billboard was right by our offices.

There has been high public outrage and disgust over these billboards. But these companies are obviously not backing down anytime soon (Calvin Klein is a veteran in causing scandals with their ads—Brooke Shields and her jeans, anyone?), because they also know those other words of wisdom: bad press is better than no press. The Huffington Post has put together a slide-show of the most scandalous New York City billboards, in case you need proof.

Nudity definitely catches my eye, and that’s the first sign of a successful ad. Next it should make you want to buy the product. For me, the nudity doesn’t sell. But it doesn’t not sell me, which is also key.

Have you ever completely stopped buying a brand based solely on an ad you found distasteful? And not buying American Apparel because Dov Charney is a creep is a different issue (although no less important, it’s just not what we’re discussing here).

the thing is- bad press is GOOD press. people across the country saw that calvin klein billboard (via the web or morning news shows), and ck didn't even have to pay for national advertising. think about it.

People are so shook up by this around here and yet on TV there's ppl blowing each others' brains out on a daily basis for entertainment's sake and that's fine... how hypocritical.
i don't necessarily love this ad. but i do love CK ads in general. And i see nothing wrong with most AA ads...
I do sorely miss Gucci ads circa Tom Ford
those billboards have nothing on this

i remember it being all over Vogue Russia for months and I loved every second of it.

The CK one doesn't bother me--although it looks more like a gang bang than an orgy--but the AA one where she's bending over with her legs spread is ridiculous.

i think it's great that the calvin klein ads are as much about male nudity as they are about female...

to NYCshoegal: yeah I like that ad too, although I think it's different than most of the ones in the HuffPo slideshow because it has a definite sense of humor about it, a more playful way of looking at sex

American Apparel is just tacky, and seeing their ads and visiting their website makes me NOT want to buy their clothes.

The Abercrombie & Fitch close up of the crotch with the guy's hard on is just...distasteful. That one and anything American Apparel bothers me. The rest I think are very sexy, and I see nothing wrong with them.

This campaign from CK has implied nudity.. and people should not make such big scandal.

Until mankind is peaceful enough not to have [sex] on [tv], there's no point in taking it out of [fashion] that need it for entertainment value.

sometimes you have to show a little skin, this reminds guys of being naked and then they think of sex!

oh, and i have to agree with guest 8, this looks more like a being playful, possibly gearing up to an orgy moment, not a gang bang at all.

c'mon, update guys, that billboard was replaced over a week ago with a new one of Eva Mendes, because apparently Doutzen in a bikini wasn't enough skin, LOVE IT.
