Adventures in Copyright: Tweed Off

urban and alex.jpgWe struggled with this one because Urban Outfitters is essentially an homage to Alexander Wang and Dov Charney, but a reader sent it in and it is in fact ridiculous, so here you go.

While the mere thought of tweed makes us sweat right now, this cozy looking boyfriend blazer was pretty popular last year after Vika wore it down Wang’s smoky runway. So Urban’s a bit late in knocking it off (and they forgot the zippers).

Our tipster attributes its high street debut to recent appearances on NYC Prep. Apparently someone named Jessie’s been running around town in it. The show’s on fashion’s radar, so it’s not an impossible conclusion. Regardless of how or why it’s being copied and no matter how upset you are you missed out on it the first time, don’t buy it.

Mostly because copying is bad, but also because one should never spend $100 on something from Urban Outfitters.

i might just have to second mrsPILATI; although I sort of like Mr.Wang's awkward zippers.

ya Jessie wore the Alex Wang blazer in the Fashion Week episode of NYC Prep (a show I sadly admit to watching religiously -I'm suffering from GG withdrawal!)

Considering that Wang hasn't had an original idea ever, I have no problem and in fact encourage others to copy him. What is better than copying a copier?

I agree that you shouldn't spend $100 on anything from UO. Because next week it'll be $24.99.

I have to admit to really liking this blazer, though. I think this may be one case in which Adventures in Copyright was counterproductive, for me.

Seriously Fashionista, I love the Wangster but I also know that his shit aint original. AT ALL. Not to mention that they are made in China. So yeah, since I missed the original, I wouldn't mind buying the "knockoff of a knockoff of a knockoff". But I'd wait for it to go to $39.99. !

i like that u.o. one better lol...i would get it but on sale hahaha

and the alex w. one is not exactly original except for the zippers (which is basically what made it cool) which u.o. didn't bother to copy so is it real an adventure in copyright?

What's really annoying about both of these jackets is that the sleeves are ruched for the "scrunched up to my elbows" effect. Way too tries-to-hard.

Lauren,
I scrunch my sleeves up to my elbows all the time. I like it and think it looks casual.
I hope people don't think I'm trying too hard, I just feel more comfortable that way;
I have warm forearms.

Darcykins, I think she means that they are sold pre-scrunched, and sewn that way. I wear all of my sleeves pushed up too, but I don't like stuff that is sold already pushed up...is that weird?

Also, I have several T by Alexander Wang tees and they are all made in the U.S.A.

Like someone already said, it's just one copycat copying another copycat. One out of every five thrift stores has one of these somewhere. Please stop throwing yourselves at Wang's feet. The man's big claim to fame is sticking a zipper or a piece of leather onto something my sister wore in the late '80s/early '90's.

Reenie,

Yep, that's what I mean! Of course we all wear our sleeves pushed up, but "pre-scrunched" is kind of silly, no?

Reenie, T by Alexander Wang is currently made in Vietnam. I don't think anything by Wang has been made in the US since 2007.

Oh, sorry. I had no idea they were pre-scrunched. That's horrible!
I couldn't wear that, it would drive me crazy.

#15, that sucks!!! I hate when designers get shady about sewing the label on in the U.S. and then claiming "made in the u.s.a."

i know i'm late to the discussion -- but i love urban outfitters, i shop there all the time, i just don't think anything in there is worth paying even $50 for since it falls apart in about a month

I totally second Britt on the notion. .. their stuff is badly made and overpriced. I won't pay more than $30 for anything from UO (and it has to be something I really REALLY want too . . .)

Oh and another reason why I won't buy full price . . . I once bought a top that tore up from UO (I think it was dry rotted). I got pissed and took it back. But the manager on duty refused to give me my money back (even though I had a receipt and everything). The item was less than two weeks old. Bad.

who really cares if there are knockoffs. its not as if you wouldnt buy them whoever wrote this post. Its not like the real thing is even accessible to the masses, and the real thing is overpriced for something that isnt even very expensive in raw form.

Did you know that on wholesale, one fox skin is worth 10.00 or a little bit more than that. Then companies come out with their fox fur coats or jackets and price them at 10,000 dollars.

I'm sorry, but as a broke college student, I rely very greatly on UO, and in fact a good 40% of my wardrobe is from there, and I've yet to have anything fall apart on me. I wouldn't keep shopping there if it did.
