Cover Swap

seventeenretrocover.jpgSeventeen magazine is turning 65 this year and some of you may have seen this September 1944 cover that is going out to subscribers as a way to commemorate the milestone.

This got me thinking that a) we probably won’t see many more magazines make it to the 65 year mark (if they haven’t already) and b) sometimes I wish that our subscriptions would, from time to time, just come with a retro cover from some period in their history. (God, am I feeling wistful this afternoon, or what?)

Considering how dull many of us find US cover options to be these days, wouldn’t it be a lovely surprise to open your mailbox and see an illustrated Vogue cover from the 20s, Bianca Jagger from the 1974, or anything of the supes from the 80s and 90s. Instead of Leighton Meester, you’d get Jean Shrimpton from a 1965 Harper’s Bazaar. Oh, and all the delicious old W’s. Yum. There are even a bunch of celeb covers that I wouldn’t mind revisiting.

Of course, I realize this is never going to happen. But it’s a fun thing to think about on a gloomy, humid Thursday afternoon.

So what would be your picks?

omg, i love it.
who is that on the cover?
imagine seventeen still looked like that!

i have some really good old vogues from the 40s and 50s. when Dior, Balenciaga and Lanvin were still alive.

It would be great if alot of magazines used more models on their covers rather than overexposed celebs.

No Abby I strongly disagree with this...past be past...even if it was better.

but puting an old cover today would just be MAJOR lazyness, and very un-creative ...I still believe there is new teritory out there...if only more people were allowed to do so and so many interests won't rule the bussiness.

i usually just borrow 17 from friends or rent it at the library every month (i have enough magazine subscriptions as it is) but this makes me want to subscribe right now!

YES YES YES this is a GREAT idea and frankly, i dont see how someone hadn't thought of it earlier?

well, im sure people have but why not do something about it? thank you 17...i hope people will do this more often.

cesarcmma : i dont think this would be laziness, or uncreative at all. as long as the issue was up to par or better than average, the cool old fashioned cover would be MUCH MUCH better than the boring same old covers that grace every single magazine on the stands nowadays.

I think it's a cute idea to do once... but not more often than that. Of course, you'd have to do with subscribers, because I don't think this cover would sell at the newsstands. Bazaar has been doing this for a while, now, having a more traditional newsstand cover with a more avante garde subscription cover.

But yes, US covers are soooo boring and predictable! The Charlize Theron September Vogue cover... snooze! Let's get Chanel Iman or Anja Rubik or some great new face on there for a change. Surprise us! I suppose celebrity covers sell more, but really, don't people who love fashion - LIVE for fashion - prefer to see models on the cover?!

oh, and does anyone else think the 17 cover model looks like a young Carolina Herrera?

It's Tatler magazine's 300th anniversary this year! We're the world's oldest magazine - and the November issue will be MASSIVE with lots of fashion through the ages etc.

I just picked up the Sept issues of Elle and Bazaar. Both are extremely bland and "budget". And by "budget" i dont mean showing reasonably priced clothes, but rather clearly hiring second rate talent for the shoots... Someone on the editorial staff is clearly getting lazy - the same famous designers are shown page after page, with no budding or exciting new talent to be seen anywhere! Gimmi some Jenni Kayne,Camilla Skovgaard, Brian Reyes or Yigal Azrouel! Just dont make me doze off while flipping through...

wow! 65 years...i actually saved the 50th anniversary issue that i bought back in middle school, laetitia casta is the cover model. i guess that means i've been magazine obsessed for 15 years. i still have it at my parent's house, at the time my plan was to save it for my future daughter!

magazines may not be what they used to be, but speaking of anniversaries, vogue australia is celebrating their 50th and will be featuring not one, but 4 beautiful illustrated covers of the lovely cate blanchett.

i will add that one to my archive as well!
