Enough Already, Bazaar

leightonmeesteragedforbazaar.jpgBeing a former magazine editor, and still a current magazine lover, I often get angry when I see things I once loved go sour. I already made it pretty clear how I felt about the pick-up paparazzi shot of Angelina Jolie that Harper’s Bazaar used on the cover.

And, forgive my rant, Glenda, but now I’ve got another gripe. Enough with the “At Every Age” shtick. Please. It seems like every single story in the magazine now has this age component.

Apparently even cover stories are no longer immune as Leighton Meester has been digitally aged on the inside pages. I’m happy that Leighton scored a big cover. But is this really the best idea to be had about what to do with her?

I’m all for speaking to a wider audience than just twenty-somethings. I’m no longer one of those myself. And I recognize the intent to offer service to readers. But I truly don’t understand the widespread use of this device. Not only does it cause readers to avoid certain sidebars or boxes, but more importantly it’s just plain boring.

Is this photo trickery with Leighton supposed to somehow bridge the gap between the Gossip Girl crowd and their moms? Because I definitely had no desire to see Blair transform into Eleanor.

What do you guys think?

oh my god i completely agree. i think the 'at every age' is ridiculous! you have to wear a blazer when your 30? pant suit at 50? so dumb!! it always upsets me! they are categorizing fashion by the age of the person who should wear it??!! it's pathetic and it goes against my principles of style. i am so thankful you posted this because this has always been a pet peeve of mine.

Remember when French Vogue did this concept with Eniko Mihalik, showing her from age 10 to 60? That was done with much more style ... this simply wasn't executed correctly.

Why would they do that? Lately the mag has been slipping... it was once my favorite but after this I am not so sure.

I remember that Eniko spread in FV - and LOVED it. This image of Leighton at 60 is totally different from that, in a bad way. It immediately made me feel really sad for her - is this what she'll look like in 40 years? If so, she needs to stock up on tightening cream, STAT. My mom is almost 60 and doesn't have 90% of the wrinkles that the image above does.

Way-to-go digitally aged Meester for not giving into the Botox craze and digitally aging with grace. Fake laugh lines never looked so good!

I completely agree! Thanks for posting this! The whole "At every age" thing is done. Move on. No longer "twenty-something" either but after being in the fashion industry some "twenty-something" years, I'm getting very tired of the redundancy.

I'm just about to turn 20 and I usually find when I look at Bazaar that I like the pieces selected for their 50s age group!

I agree guest 9, they seem to have these stupid rules for all the decades that I never identify with. The 20s are all about showing off the legs in mini skirts, which I (a 20 something) detest! On the other hand, their attempts to do something different/ toughen up a dress for a 50 something woman usually involve a leather jacket or boots, which I always find myself lusting after. Totally agree with Abby, this 'dress your age' concept is pretty redundant, and I think most women who read these magazines have the general hang of it. Plus my fashion icons have usually been women like Vivienne Westwood and Carine Roitfeld who have never dressed their age!

Oh my god, I AM SO WITH YOU, ABBY! But my coworker broke it down for me in a way that makes a bit more sense (I haven't read any other comments so forgive me if this has already been touched upon); those "at every age" angles are for women who don't know what they eff they're doing when they step outside their house. I was literally scoffing at the page when my coworker said : "Look outside. See that lady, the 50 something with the camel toe, spagetti-strap neon pink top and Louboutins? This page is FOR HER." It dawned on me that many many many women buy fashion mags and they claim to love fashion but that doesn't mean they can dress. Anyway, I still believe that for those of us who do have a knack of knowing what looks good our bodies at whatever age- this can become eye-roll worthy.

I couldn't agree more. The Angelina cover was inexcusable-so much so I wrote a letter to the Editor. And this age stuff is bloody ridiculous especially as I as a 53 year old own stuff that aleways appears in the 20-30 year categlory, usually Marni. Also is Diane Sawyer their poster child for 60+?

I agree with Abby. I love Harpers' I read it every month- but all their "aging" segments make me skip half the magazine at times... which is annoying.

You're just noticing this now? LOL. No seriously, I agree with you 100%. I'm glad Fashionista said something because HB's grim age determinism is so lame.

Dear Abby,

You should probably reconsider opening any blog that is about to criticize Glenda Bailey's judgement with "being a former magazine editor" when your credentials pale in comparison.

I actually rather enjoy the goal of the Bazaar franchise "Fab at Every Age" - it encourages thirty year-old Gossip Girl obsessed adults to grow up and change into their big girl clothes rather than continue to live in your deluded world where you are forever a twenty-something.

Sure you say, "I'm all for speaking to a wider audience than just twenty-somethings. I'm no longer one of those myself" yet you end your post with such a "clever" twenty-something (teeny-something??) quote, "Because I definitely had no desire to see Blair transform into Eleanor." Trite.

Maybe you should stick to criticizing the magazines that deal solely with the twenty-something audience because it doesn't really seem like you have a broad enough perspective. I would actually encourage you to take a better look at those "Fab at Every Age" features. Might help you get your style up to par with who you claim to be. Might make your readers more confident about who their source is.

looking rough, abby.

Dear asshole commenter,

Why don't you spend your time trying to sell ads for your failing Bazaar pages instead of knocking an editor who has the audacity to say what's true. Everyone knows Glenda added those pages just to show more product, and still NOBODY'S BUYING THEM. Even that wretched stint on The Fashion Show couldn't save you.

Maybe you're on a tirade because you realize Abby's going to have a job next year, while you and your pathetic minions will be working - in the words of one Fashionista reader - "at Cat Fancy."

Hope you enjoy Fancy Feast in your new caf.

Dear #23....(abby???? abby's bff???),

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I completely respect yours but choose to reply without having to use crass language especially around such a young audience!

Unnecessary publishing industry commentary aside (sounds like you have a personal issue there), perhaps you are most peeved that my point is valid and true. Otherwise why resort to such a layman thing to do as cursing? Not very classy, are you? Cursing always weakens an argument.

Abby, as exhibited in her main fashionista pix, is poorly dressed and poorly styled, which makes her a bit of a hypocrite, no? That would be the right word to use here versus your word "audacious." And the fact that she so often contradicts her statements throughout this post makes her opinion neither strong nor trustworthy and therefore irrelevant.

Instead of being angry at a nameless face (and being that you are such a huge Abby fan or a friend or very passionate fan ...whichever applies), you should encourage her to update her look or maybe just her pics?? You'd be crazy not to agree that I am indeed correct in all of my observations.

You should also try to make your comments constructive instead of just string of lame insults about something that wasn't even the subject of conversation. At least I offer suggestions in my comment and, most importantly, proof. If I were abby, Id be ashamed that it is you defending my name so offensively.

Best regards,
#22

No. 22/24, I'm confused about who you think reads this blog. I'm pretty sure most of us can handle the word "asshole".

I don't know what you have against Abby, but you're being really mean. Abby looks great in her photo, and you can see about 1/32nd of what she is wearing so I don't know what your basing your wild claims that she isn't who she "claims to be" on. I don't see how it's hypocritical of her to write about her opinions on a magazine while also having posted a photo of her self in a perfectly normal strapless dress?

Dear 22/24,
You obviously don't visit the front row of Fashion shows as most of the editors are poorly dressed/styled.
With regards to the Style at Every Age section, I am in my 50's and find the section silly. This is because I often would wear or own clothes that are suggested in the 30's bracket as well as those shown for 40, 50 and the 70's. it is a Gimmick and if glenda wants to be taken seriously by the fashion world she should stop it.
