People Are Talking

He Doesn’t Even Look Like a “Garth”

gareth pugh is not garth pugh.jpgYo Fashionista,

I’m sure you guys have already heard and formed opinions about Perez Hilton’s new fashion blog, CocoPerez.com.

I’m offended that he even thinks he can legitimately comment on fashion - especially when he spells Gaultier Gautier and thinks someone in London makes clothes under the name Garth Pugh. I’m just wondering if you guys plan to comment on it or not? I understand that commenting on it would only reinforce his perceived legitimacy, but I simply cannot stand that he’s doing this. I mean the stories so far are ripped straight from your headlines! He’s clearly stealing content from Jezebel and WWD, too without crediting anyone and more importantly without bringing anything new to the discussion. It sucks. Especially after fashion bloggers have been working hard for so long to be taken seriously.

Just wondering what your take will be….

to be honest, when he posts about fashion it's a good many hours after i've read it on wwd or here on fashionista. maybe he's bored..? i don't see him as a fashion blogger, but i guess i get the jump for him. regardless, i don't give it much merit. it's ridiculous, but i think those who are really into fashion will read more legitimate blogs such as this one.

Hey Loyal Fan, maybe you should read things in their entirety before sending emails which make you sound foolish and clueless. If you were not aware, this was an INTERVIEW between Perez and Sarah Bernard who is the host of The Thread, and quite frankly a poor writer. She wrote the piece so those are her spelling errors.

And I think this whole website is pretty ridiculous - just like Perez himself. I do admire the fact that he admitted to not knowing a thing about fashion, yet he knows what looks good on women? Why because he's gay? Or because he drools over the thousands of photos of celebrities and posts them on his website? I guess you no longer need any qualifications or prior knowledge to start your own "fashion" website. Nice work Perez.

I cannot stand Perez Hilton.
I hated his original site and have no desire to see what he calls a fashion blog.
I don't think he is at all fashionable and doubt he knows a lot about fashion.
I suspect he's one of those people that doesn't even know the designers names behind big fashion houses and buys things like Dior sweat bands (if that exists) and talks about how much he loves Dior.
And I hate his little pink patches of hair and whiny 'i'm so cool' demeanor.
I also think he is a horrible representative for gay rights in the USA.

Wow. I feel angry. Maybe I should try drinking less coffee.

I put Perez as a fashion blogger in the same category as Henry Holland as a fashion designer. Ludicrous and unnecessary.

Having said that - he is going to milk it in, isn't he? Aaaand perhaps he won't guard his words as much as bloggers with actual loyalty to fashion which could be interesting.

I hope he has some ruthless mole digging up some juice on Ms Wintour et al. They don't usually play nice so why should he? For gossip purposes this might be ok?

Darcykins, I heart you, and I couldn't agree more. I used to think he just rubbed me the wrong way, but when he used the f word towards Will.i.am, and then tried to justify it, it just confirmed that he was a douchebag. Sidebar-I just saw a Tod's ad in Harper's Bazaar that had the word "d-bag" scrawled over one of their bags. I know it's immature, but I can't help it-it made me laugh. Back to topic-I meant to mention before that I am outraged that Perez is using the name Coco! I don't know if he's referencing the model, or the designer, or both, but I doubt that either one would want to be associated with him. Was the domain name PerezPretendsToKnowAboutFashion.com taken?

Ugh.

So pissed I had to comment twice-

Alright everyone, while I do agree that he is clearly pulling content from other sites and what he is doing with CocoPerez isn’t very good, let’s take a look at the bigger picture. Remember, we are talking about Perez Hilton! He’s not doing that site for the readers of Fashionista or Style.com, he’s doing it for his readership who is far larger much more mass. While nothing is wrong with that at all, he’s not writing for the fashion audience or people who are big fan’s of fashion, he’s primarily writing for everyone else. He is certainly not writing for the readers of this site and I honestly don’t think he cares too.

On the same lines as Jean Voltaire,
CocoPerez will be the fast food of fashion blogging, cheap and flavorless. It will be fashion dumbed down for the general public who pretend to care about fashion, aspiring to spend their pennies on Uggs and Juicy.
And while this upsets us, there is a market that wants to read his uninformed opinion on couture, and that is alright for him as long as he gives credit where credit is due.
I will not be reading this awful excuse for a fashion blog as I have nothing to learn from him. Additionally this is the only commentary I will make about his site for I hope his name is never spoken on fashion blogs again.

As someone who would cut off several fingers to be the author of a fashion blog w/so many automatic readers, I really don't see how it's his place to be writing this kind of content. When reading his blog, I enjoy the MSPainted words that he uses to comment on the fashion victories/fauxpas of celebrities. But that's about as much credibility I give him. Honestly, I find that the fact that he's starting a blog from scratch & already has millions of readers & industry connections more annoying then when Mary Murphy screams on So You Think You Can Dance. In case you don't watch it, let me just say, I don't think anything more annoying exists.

Jeez. You guys are all really angry!

I'm an avid reader of Perez and Fashionista. I'd say the other two sites I frequent most are The Cut, and Gawker.

Though it's been said, I want to reiterate that I don't think he is trying to cut off serious fashion bloggers at the knees, he's just a good business man and expanding his empire. Kudos to him. Not to get all Bill O'Reilly on you (if you don't catch the reference, you need to expand your reading habits), but he really encompasses a form of the American dream.

That said, I understand the feeling that he's almost usurping others' power, but come on. He's not trying to steal readership - does that even happen? It's the internet! Can't the fluffy fashion stuff exist with the hardcore?

I don't hear anyone shitting on People StyleWatch or Eonline Fashion. I think that's more what he's going for, at least that's how it seems to me.

I will remain a loyal reader to Fashionista, but I'll read his too.

Why waste energy being so angry?

You cant just have a little tyranny over fashion blogging and say 'oh, only fashiony people should do fashion blogs', blah blah blah. Perez may not be a fashion expert but he get the information out quicker than any other website and he makes it comical. Every website has its flaws, including this one. Perez reaches more people than most other sites and I think it's good that fashion news is being reported to a larger number of people. I think people that make fun of of Perez's websites a jealous of the success he created in a blog. Get over the fact that people love Perez's gossipy sites!

i would also like to request that you all please stop acting like fashion is fucking molecular biology. Not everyone has to be off beat and sooo sub-culture to have their own opinion and spin about it.

ohh... come on you guys! 'WORTHY'??? Grow up! How is one supposed to be WORTHY of fashion? Isn't fashion an expression? Trends echo the world's problems. We choose whatever we wanna wear depending on our moods. How we feel, no?

Gossip is the same thing. Whatever we gossip about and HOW we do it (what words we use, how vicious or whatever) reflects what's going on inside our minds and lives. Kinda like fashion in a smaller scale.
I do not like his sites. He steals from Michael K. HE is sacred! BUT I think it makes absolute sense for him to be making a fashion site. It seems natural for him to expand his business into something much more solid. A more visual way of being an influence in pop culture. His music thing seems like the same thing to me. Perez is part of pop culture, like it or not.
If anyone is stupid enough to think that his new site will take away readers from more 'WORTHY' sites. Do yourself a favor and grow a brain. That is impossible. 'WORTHY' fashion people (and people who think you have to be worthy of fashion, btw) do not care for what he has to say. And he in turn, doesn't care what you have to say. It is the MASS that cares and he cares about. They want to read more and know more. Those who do not breathe for fashion but still like looking good and wearing trends. Which, curiously, will probably benefit 'WORTHY' fashion people and their business. Think GAP. They are not idiots.
