Holmes & Yang to Launch This Fall

tomkatiesuri.jpgBack in the spring we talked about the news that Scientology’s most famous spouse, Katie Holmes was working on a children’s clothing line. And as far back as last fall, when Katie sported that jumpsuit creation, we pondered what sort of design project she was working on exactly.

Today we get confirmation from WWD that both the kiddo clothes and their grown-up counterparts will debut this fall exclusively at Maxfield in Los Angeles. The line - Holmes & Yang - is, as expected, designed by Katie and her stylist Jeanne Yang. No photos have leaked yet but it is “said to be full of classic fare.” I’m not really sure how to take that, especially if that jumpsuit was any indication of design direction.

And who exactly is the customer? Obviously, it’s going to be expensive - you don’t launch exclusively at Maxfield otherwise. The first group I think of is the older Beverly Hills crowd because I’m not seeing the younger side of Hollywood here at all. Maybe that’s the better way to go, but do those ladies care about Katie Holmes? We’ll see.

The children’s clothes are sure to be a bit precious. Suri’s a doll, no doubt. But she’s never dressed in the kinds of clothes that scream, “Let’s run around the yard and play in the sandbox.” Is there a place for another high end kiddie line, even in LA?

Of course, she’s free to do whatever she wants with her time and her money, but this just seems like a big waste of it to me. Maybe Pacey, er, Josh Jackson and Diane Kruger could knock some fashion sense into her.

One thing’s for certain: Tom will be quoted ad nauseam about Kate’s “amazing” work.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was pretty frocks like Suri's. Oh the horror of being forced into brown dungarees and told to go play outside.

I think it's a credit to Katie that she's working with her stylist on this project, when she could really have just licensed the thing. A small line available at one store seems respectful of the times and her inexperience in the field. I also would say that Tommy Perse wouldn't buy something that wasn't wonderful, even if it was coming from a celebrity. Plus, like her friend Victoria Beckham, Katie is one of the few Angelinos that wears real, high end fashion on a regular basis. So, certainly there isn't the ghost-designer a la roland mouret, but I think allying herself with someone familiar with Balenciaga and McQueen and Lanvin like Ms. Yang is really smart. I would point to Gwen Stefani's work with Andrea Lieberman on L.A.M.B as proof positive of succesful celebrity-stylist partnership.

And suri is better dressed than her mom, so I can't wait to see what katie drums up for her.

Maybe she can design the uniforms for the cult center slaves (whoops, I mean the Scientology Celebrity Center employees)
