Phillip Lim, Shop Boy

Thursday, Aug 6, 2009 / 9:44 AM

phillip and doutzen at the met.jpgI’ve been meaning to tell you guys about this all week.
Last Sunday, while I splashed in mud at All Points West, a friend did some Back to School (minus the school part) shopping in Soho.
She was trying on the Mongolian fur vest, the one Iris Strubegger rocked down the AW09 runway, at Phillip Lim, when Lim himself popped out onto the floor to spend some quality time with his customers, most of whom had no idea who he was.
He argued with my friend about which size to get, she wanted six, he wanted four, and built a few outfits onto different women until a group of girls, “who looked like they stepped out of Teen Vogue” came in the store and blew his cover. He stuck around though, offering advice and chatting up customers. As if the man could be more perfect.

nice of him, more designers should care so much about their boutiques. bummed out as i was in the store saturday afternoon and he was not there!

awwww
don’t you think designer houses could sell so much more merch if their designers did this Lim sort of thing ?

What a great way to make the clothes more personal! Every time she wears that piece, she’ll think of the interaction that came with it. I agree with NYCShoeGal that it would have a positive impact on business. Perhaps Britt should have even posed the question: Which designer would you like to have a one-on-one with? :)

I call Vivienne Westwood.
and Tom Ford can assist me try on his boy suits any day.

How do you NOT know who Phillip Lim is… they had to have been tourists. I wonder if he will care as much as he does about his customers in a few years when he will be known around the world…

Since I am beyond obsessed with Stefano Pilati and YSL in general… it’s pretty obvious who I would want to dress (undress?) me.

A class act all the way…. and yes, #5, he will still care about his clients down the line!! Great designer, and nice man.

I’d love to shop w/ DVF, she knows how to flatter a woman’s body and she seems like a genuinely kind person…

Jean Voltaire, 6.9 Phillip Lim is represented in 45 countries and available at nearly 400 boutiques and department stores worldwide. Having stores in NYC, LA and Tokyo, I’m sure he’s a little known right now.
But then again, all Asians look alike. I can’t tell my Lim’s and Wang’s from my Lam’s and Cho’s.

This is so wonderful to hear, I’d argue with Mr. Lim any day :)

Rash – I am aware of his points of distribution, that’s not what I was referring to. His name as a top designer is for the most part still unknown in the major world markets.
