Fashion Is Fun

Run This Town

rihannajayzkanyerunthistown.jpgThe new Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye tune is definitely my new jam. I’ve been listening to it on repeat all week long. And now I’m officially obsessed with the video. And you know how much we love Rihanna around here, and as usual she looks amazing.

Stylistically, it’s very urban Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The major sartorial theme seems to be covering up, with blacked out sunglasses, hoodies, bandanas, hats. But what really caught my eye is this hat with the netting over Rihanna’s eyes. It’s like a little touch of Parisian chic thrown into this really rough setting. Like much of what Riri wears, I don’t think I could really pull it off, though if I tried, I’m thinking evening with a LBD.

Also of note, her wicked long pointy nails and serious finger jewelry. Practical? No. Sexy? In their own deadly way, yes.

Plus Jay-Z namechecks Margiela. And that’s pretty awesome too.

"Jewelry" is spelled wrong.

I have always loved how Jay-Z throws the names of designers/labels into his songs. He has mentioned Burberry, Manolo, and more I'm sure I just can't think of them off the top of my head. I think the juxtaposition between rappers trying to be so "tough" and fashion is great.

I think Jay-Z name checking Margiela is trashy. Same with the Teyana Taylor and Chris Brown rap name checking Y-3 and McQueen. It makes me think of all the times I heard Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton in rap songs when I was young, or saw the head to toe logo outfits in videos with lots of cussing, stripping, and money being thrown around. It reduces the designer's work, belief and philosophy to a trend in hip hop, and before you know it every other rapper will be throwing out Balenciaga or YSL, and it takes away from what they do. Their work shouldn't be equated with a trend in hip hop. But that's just my opinion...

guest #3:
i think it's unfair 2 put a seasoned (read: rich) artist like Jay-Z in the same category as a Chris Brown. considering Jay-Z helmed Rihanna's fashionista reformation back in '07, I am under the assumption that he likes nice things & understands why Margiela makes a better white woven than FUBU or another "trend in hip-hop."

to the guest who commented as #3, I hope you also feel the same way when many of Young Hollywood who are often placed on the covers of magazines outfitted in some of these same designers, lessens the work of the designers........for example, the likes of Lindsay lohan, who at a relatively young age, dabbled in cocaine or Mischa Barton who had to go to rehab and was placed under a psychiatric hold possibly due to drug use, smongst others.

It is quite fine to be disgusted with hip hop, but the cussing, lewd behavior is just not limited to rappers....there are plenty of young hollywood stars who have had plenty of sex tapes, engaged in illegal behavior, had numerous stints in rehab and criminal run-ins themselves.....and yet they are often dressed up in those same designers. so let's make sure if we labe one group trashy, keep it real and name others as well.

Rap musicians, like many of young Hollywood's predominately white faces, are all still just "entertainers"...and the messages/images that many in hip-hop make are quite often make-believe and manufactured just like mostly everything else.

Rap and fashion are both art. Anyone is allowed to reference anything in art, no matter how much money they have. A trend in fashion is no different than a trend in hip hop. Biggie Smalls was just as skilled in rapping as Coco Chanel was in tailoring.

Very well put, #5!

I remember realizing that Biggie namechecks Moschino in "Hypnotize" years ago when I was at the gym, and it made me so happy!!!

personally the video reminded me of tupac's california love, and rihanna singing on the hook is...not that great, but fashion wise I think she looked amazing.

i understand where #11 and #12 are coming from with her trying so hard. the rocker, badass, retro thing gets old after awhile.
