The September Issue

the september issue review.jpgThe only movie that’s made me laugh harder than The September Issue this year is The Hangover.

Anna Wintour is funny; my mascara is smudged from tears of laughter. The film may start out with Anna saying that fashion’s picked on because people are bitter they aren’t a cool kid, but she only gets more human from there and by the end you might even want to hug her.

Grace Coddington is, as reported, the real star of the movie. Her inner turmoil over the changing industry and her role in Anna’s history plays out on screen and one can’t help but sympathize with her as Anna cancels more and more of her shoots.

The movie travels from New York to Paris for couture to London for a meeting with Mario Testino to Rome for Sienna’s shoot and back to New York to close the issue and present it to Si Newhouse. In Paris, we cringed when Anna shut Stefano Pilati down; in London we laughed at Mario’s grandly cinematic ideas and in Rome we admired Sienna’s energy and Sally Singer’s patience.

Anna takes control of everything, from the Gap/CFDA collaborations to finding a consultant for Mango (Thakoon?) to the textures in one of Grace’s editorials — living proof of the cerulean speech. Of course, the most fascinating part is watching people cower in her presence. Edward Enninful says, “I want to kill myself,” Oscar De La Renta eliminates a look, Grace hopes she doesn’t get fired and in fact, only Karl Lagerfeld is praised. He presents Anna with a boucle jacket named for the editor and she declares it “beautiful.”

We don’t want to give too much away, so just know that it’s amazing and worth more than your twelve dollars. Also know that the lingering shot of Fiji water bottles inside Andre Leon Talley’s Louis Vuitton tennis trunk have become 100% more symbolic.

Reviews are DEFINITELY not your thing.
Britt I dont know how you do it but when you right personal opinion stuff like that I just hate you so much... you are so bland, boring , contrived, you seem to be victim-y and reaaaally uncool.. someone told me you wear jean shorts as well... not like cool cutoffs, and that you're kinda flabby?is Ny really as B-O-R-I-N-G as it seems that you have to go out and get fat??

I don't normally comment but i think Britt is charming and you guest #6 are heartless and terribly rude. Do you forget that Britt is a human being with feelings or are you just clueless to anyones feelings but your own? I understand INTELLIGENT criticism but you are just cruel and catty.

Wow, Guest 6, just... wow! I have often not been the biggest supporter of Britt's writing (she seems a bit elitist sometimes), but you just took the cake hon!
The commentators here can get a bit snarky sometimes (myself included), but personal attacks about her body type and the clothes she wears? Britt writes a pretty successful fashion blog, so she must be doing something right, even though she doesn't live up to your delusional expectations. I would give her fashion credentials a little more weight (ha ha!) than yours I'm afraid.
That is all I have to say about this miserable attention-seeker.
And yes, dying to watch the film!! Also, is Anna on Letterman tonight or did I miss it already?

It's almost hilarious how petty and pathetic commenter 6 is.....

Get a grip and go away.....that wasn't literary or journalistic criticism it was just a personal, vile attack from someone who's messed up.

I've seen the September Issue (i was at the world premiere in July and I talked to the director) and i think Britt's review was perfectly fine and helpful to readers.

WE DONT WANT YOUR BITCHY COMMENTS GUEST 6

the comments section on a blog are not a forum for vile, hate-filled personal attacks. guest #6 clearly is a self-conscious + weak person if they have to hide their delusional personal opinions about another human being behind an anonymous blog comment. what a petty, pathetic gesture.
i happen to really like britt's writing and her review of the film only served to highten my anticipation of it.

Oh. Em. Gee.

I read Britt's (brilliant) review last night before bed, but didn't take the time to check out the comments until now. I saw there were 21, and I thought, "Ooh! There must be lots to say about the film!" Sadly, it was off topic to respond to one very stupid #6. (Although I am very happy everyone had Britt's back!)

Now, we just addressed the little issue of anonymous bashing a few posts ago. I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT. #6, you idiotic, witless little cunt, you don't even know which version of "write/right" to use, so I certainly don't need to hear your opinion on Britt's performance. If you want to bring shit like that, then have the balls to have an avatar or sign your name. Clearly, you have never even been to New York, if you don't know that it's just the opposite of boring. It's fabulous, as is Britt, as is Abby, as is the entire Fashionista community that you are not welcome in. From now on, when you get done with your shift at Express, head on over to Perez's fashion (cough, cough) blog with the other miserable fucks who like to pretend they know anything about anything.

You fucked with the wrong bitch. You want to be a bully? Real fashionistas just put you in your place. I hope you choke on your Sour Patch Kids when you see the movie. And please, 6, spare us your paltry review. Tata.

I promise I am not a mean person; I would never, ever go off on someone like that just because I disagreed with them or didn't like them. I just really, really don't like bullies, and sometimes I think they need a taste of their own medicine.

I'm even more excited to see the movie after reading about it. The "famine of beauty" part in the preview always makes me laugh.

And #29, Abby had linked it somewhere, but I can't remember where...it's on mtv.com for sure. She did great. :)

Love to all,
KD

I saw this movie at the Brisbane International Film Festival early this month and it's defintely a must-see for any fashionista.

You sit in awe watching the amount of power Anna Wintour wields, you laugh at Grace Coddington's facial expressions and Mario Testino's crazy personality.

You leave feeling so psyched at the amount of fashion you've just consumed in one sitting.

I loved it, I didn't care if the clothes were more than a year old but to be able to watch how Anna works and the people around her you forget that some things went out of style ages ago!

She's on the left- perfect skin, natural make-up, glossy hair, definitely not flabby to me!!

Her outfit was very on-trend at the time...the cobalt blue, the over-sized Giles Deacon scarf,..

People need to stop commenting on personal matters. That's why everyone is hating on you, guest 6. You took it beyond the acceptable point of article criticism.
