Adventures in Copyright: Like Prad-o

prada versus bebe pull.jpgDear Fashionista,

I’ve come to really enjoy browsing Bebe’s website for a daily dose of designer knock offs. They’re so lazy that they don’t even bother tweaking their designs in the slightest (minus cheap fabrics).

I’d grown used to their love of the sexier runway bits: sky-high Gucci heels and skintight Balmain minis, but I couldn’t have been more shocked to find this AW09 Prada dress, complete with AW09 Prada hair in their embarrassing online magazine.

There are so few women who can even pull off the original; I’m terrified to see what happens when it’s available to the masses.

xoxo,
S

I wonder if Molly Shannon would wear the Bebe.

why would "the masses" be any less capable of wearing this look well? the premise of AiC has always been sickeningly elitist, but to be so transparent about it - yikes. listen to yourselves.

Sometimes I wonder why people get sooo bothered by things like this. Yeah, it's obviously a knock-off of the Prada but there ARE differences. They might be minor but they're there. What's that? Get over it? Oh...okay.

Ha ha #2, my immediate thought was "oh, now Fashionista is creating letters from elitist readers so they won't be accused of it directly?" ;)

Real or not (probs real -- don't all the Fashionistas hate Bebe?), "S" is all mixed up. Both dresses are absolutely hideola. The Prada isn't tough to pull off because of flaws in the wearer's body; it's because it is fugly beyond words. And dare I say that the Bebe is slightly better-looking -- not that I wish to see that one on anyone's body either, be they part of the lumpen masses or not.

this is #2 -- I didn't even notice that it was supposed to be reader reported! the tone is indistinguishable from editorial Fashionista.

#4, you are completely right about the flaw being the dress design rather than either execution. it is an ugly premise.

it's a shame that bebe has gone into the business of straight copying from designers who work hard to produce these masterpieces. Honestly what would bebe do without style.com? They would probably have no business...

People need to get over the fact that companies knock off designers. It's how they stay in business, not everyone can afford real designer clothes so this is how they market to real people.

*please keep in mind that I generally love prada and own a few pieces from the brand*

But anyone who buys the prada dress should have their amex taken away for crimes against fashion. anyone who buys the bebe one should be banned from the mall.

basically, its a dress that I can't imagine anywhere but in a fashion editorial. no one would look good in it, not even the prada model wearing it on the runway. In my opinion, Bebe should be hated for copying such an ugly dress. There's gotta be something better copy.

I agree with guest #2 and #9.

It also important to note that the Bebe dress is still fairly expensive to the "masses". So I doubt that I'll be seeing this dress on every street corner.

hmm if i was forced to pick, i like the bebe one better. the fit around the arms is better. should i be losing sleep?

also, i'm starting to think the bitches that run this site get their kicks from all the negative comments on the copyright posts. any other blog would listen to their readers and stop doing them .

Why is everyone hating on the Prada one?! Have any of you actually tried it on and appreciate the amazing details and craftsmanship that goes into making the item? Have you read that piece by Faran on why knock-offs are bad?

And this didn't even come from the site's editors.

Rashomon, of course you are right that the Prada craftsmanship will be off the chain. (And knockoffs are bad, generally speaking.) But while the dress may be a work of art, it's still pretty uggsly. I'm sure some modern cave-woman type could pull it off, but how many of those are there?!

I also think this design may have first been attempted in the 1960s ... and ya know, it was pretty foogly then too. :p

I"Hideola"? Really? And what are "modern cave woman types"?

"Hideola" is a variant of "hideous."

"Modern cave-woman types" -- someone like Stella Zotis from last season's Project Runway might be able to pull off that HIDEOUS Prada dress. But Stella has better taste than that.

Bebe did it better.

lol.

The Prada model up there is frightening to look at. The Prada dress wouldn't be flattering on anyone. Not even the model.

S needs to get a clue.

Bebe made that dress wearable. I could go to a toga or 300 party and look stunning.

And yeah, I highly doubt S was looking at Bebe to get her kicks from designer knockoffs.

She was looking to see what she could get with her new paycheck. Let's be real.

Prada should be sued for copyright infringement from the Goddess Athena, Atalanta, and Artemis!!!

I don't like either but if I had to wear one I'd chose the knock off.

98% of the population cannot afford the Prada dress. And people who CAN afford it should perhaps find it in their heart to do something more worthwhile with their money.

Get over yourself.
