The Burberry show was one of those situations (I find myself in more and more of them lately) in which I know I’m supposed to play it cool and be like, “Oh yeah Emma what’s her name and that dude who takes photographs etc.,” and stand there sipping on my champagne like I’m not hungry, but really I am freaking out.
As I’ve mentioned, I’m always late, like really late, so I gave myself an hour and a half to get to the Chelsea College of Art & Design. My engraved platinum invitation said standing, and if there was going to be an epic (sorry commenter) standing line, I was going to be first. But since this was the “posh event of the week,” I was ushered in with the more important (and in this case very important) people.
My friend Imran and I grabbed the first bench opposite paparazzi to watch the A-list arrivals. First up, Hermione, aka Emma Watson, looking a hell of a lot better than I did freshman year and graciously granting interview after interview. Then Alexa Chung, Anna Wintour, Mary-Kate Olsen (those paparazzi sure know their Olsens!), Sir Phillip Greene, Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, Carine Roitfeld with Julia, Mario Testino, Erin O’Connor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jacquetta Wheeler, Daisy Lowe, Liv Tyler, Twiggy, Posh Spice, Agyness, Burberry’s CEO Angela Ahrendts and even a few politicians made their way down the plush white carpet.
Inside, the shiny white walls were embossed with Burberry’s check and each and every seat was a tiny canvas bench. Lily didn’t open, so I kept my eyes on the impossibly tan Victoria Beckham until she came out second. Then I did do my best to focus on the clothes. There were lots of belted trench coats, (surprised?), and ruched skirts and dresses in pretty pastel pinks and greens and blues. Silver sparkles popped up at the end and major platforms stomped throughout.
It was the best way to end my tour of Spring/Summer 2010 and the last day of my 24th year.
