I'm Sorry Jillian Lewis

jillianlewis7.JPGSo my first presentation of the week was in midtown, at a car showroom. I’ve always had a thing for Audis, so it was all good. But seriously, the Audi Forum on 47th and Park is playing host to a lot of presentations this season. So I appreciate the auto makers for making the space available for designers, even if girls spinning around on a large circle feels a little car show-esque.

Now, I wasn’t Jillian Lewis’ biggest fan back in her Project Runway days, but I did appreciate her preppy Ralph Lauren aesthetic. Her evolution…I’m not so sure about. The pieces she showed today seemed late to the game Balmainia meets equestrian/medicinal leggings meets metallic purple meets hard and soft that is just a bit off.

I know I sound harsh, but I just can’t find a lot to love about the collection. And I did really want to…I swear.

I actually like everything except for the silver satin pieces. The dresses are nice and I would wear the hell out of those knits.

The Audi Forum is on 47th and Park, not Fifth.

I think it's interesting that a few posts up, Doo Ri talks about-and I am paraphrasing here, can't remember her exact quote-staying true to herself and what she would want to wear, instead of letting outside influences impact her designs. Looking at this collection, I agree with Abby that the Balmain effect is pretty apparent, and it just seems...uninspired. I would be willing to bet an Audi that her heart wasn't in this one; she got stuck in her head. The metallic silver lining, of course, is that we know she's talented, so hopefully she'll come back next year with a collection that is 100% Jillian.

Oops, right #8. I have a total mental block on that one. I told my cab driver the wrong thing too yesterday! Will fix that when I pop in the office later. xA

I like the dresses. The jackets not so much.

it's not that its bad; it just really seems like its not her voice? a bit like what everyone else has been doing, but a season too late.

Better to be honest than charitable. At its most basic level, fashion exists to satisfy our desire to uplift and enhance the human form. This collection, regardless of its inspiration, fails to do that because the clothes just are not well-made. Even original designs cannot be successful if they are executed poorly. A good designer is either technically proficient, or able to find a voice within the confines of their skill set, or both. I don't think it's fair to condemn Lewis after only one outing, but right now it looks like she's just not ready to go solo yet.

i'm so glad that there's finally a review/article/blurb on this site with an opinion. it often seems like you guys do pr for every designer. perhaps next time, when a more well known designer, hopefully one who can serge the crotch seem of a legging properly (unlike jillian lewis above), you'll have another well worded opinion.
