Phillip Lim: Guaranteed Hit

PHILLIP LIM SS10 .jpgThe great thing about a Phillip Lim show is that you know you’ll love whatever comes down the runway.

It might not be revolutionary, but it’s cute, comfortable, flattering, easy to wear and pretty, which is probably why Leighton Meester sat front row bobbing her head to the music, laughing with Hamish and waving to Alexa Chung across the aisle - Lim has that effect.

Along with, at least yesterday, a “Woah, what’s going on” effect when he sent out five dresses that might as well have had Rodarte labels sewn into the neck. A quick scan of the front row’s eyeballs made it clear how blatant the ‘inspiration’ was.

But other than that there were sequins and sequins and more sequins, an adorable red patent trench and, I’m sorry to say, a handful of crop tops. No pants I can do, but crop tops will never happen (for me I mean).

The gold sequin romper Hanne wore toward the end though? That will most definitely happen.

Thats so funny you said that because I was looking at the collection last night on the nytimes website (they are ALWAYS the first to post) and I was shocked when that first dress appeared about two thirds through the collection. I immediately style.com-ed rodarte spring 2009. Cute dresses, but the collection was great and probably could have done without those mulleavy sister inspired numbers.

oh well, I still love phillip, and if I don't get my hands on the grey silk pleated-skirt dress with the leather paneling in the front that was shown under a leather jacket...i. will. die.

The use of sequins this season has been so, so amazing. We especially loved Chris Benz, but that romper is indeed AMAZING. Sigh.

I was really taken aback when I saw those Rodarte dresses come down the runway. I was surprised there was no mention of the eerie similarity on Style.com, but I'm glad you guys called it out. That said, I'd still love to shop that whole collection, especially that burnished sequin number. Sigh.

Ugh, I knew I could trust you guys to point out that blatant over-display of Rodarte affection. Where the hell was style.com on this?

One of the pics in the Post yesterday had one of the Rodarte-esque pieces and I thought they had printed the wrong name.

I'm going to call him out on this the next time I see him.
