“One day in a vintage shop I found… a pair of skinny acid-wash jeans. It was like, Ahhh! - a halo was shining around them. I wore them every day. When I got my first big break, I thought, ‘Screw it, I’m wearing the jeans to the interview with the editor in chief.’ I wanted to see what would happen if I was real. I remember telling her, ‘I’m not your typical fashion editor. I work hard and I know my stuff, but you should know, I’ll be the one wearing acid-wash jeans.’ I got the job.” — Kate Lanphear in this month’s issue of Elle.

i've worked in the fashion industry for ages and i've NEVER met anyone less into themselves than Kate. She's the nicest, most down to earth editor and i guarantee she doesn't think of herself as a style icon...it's not her fault she's stunning & all the street photogs want to take her picture

agreed - i've worked in fashion a long time too and she's always been this cool. she's not trying to be overly edgy by any means, she is one of the most genuine people in this industry and she's just herself and doesn't put on any airs - something so rare. she is just that cool and incredible! And beyond sweet to boot. anyone who could possibly hate on her has no clue what they are talking about. and she always has a kind word to say!

Commenter #1: please. Everyone knows KL is one of the NICEST, most down to earth folks working in fashion. She deserves all the props that she receives.
She's now my new inspiration for my job search... be yourself, and maybe you'll get the job you want!!!

No. 8; it always makes me happy to see a bit of ol' Pats as well.

i think she's way too into the image she's crafted for herself with all of the street style posing of late. all it takes is a look through PMC archives to see she used to dress no different than any other editor. it's great she's found a look/identity that works (not to mention she's much thinner now that she's a 'style icon') but she shouldn't patronize us with stories of how she's always been so edgy. (not to mention, i find her current style sort of overrated, no?)
