Would You Wear

Would You Bare Your Midriff?

baremidriffgraphic.jpgEach day of NYFW presented more and more examples of belly baring for S/S 2010. From Alex Wang and Brian Reyes to Yigal and Charlotte Ronson, and about a dozen other in between, skinny model tummies were everywhere. And this got me quaking in my booties, no doubt.

First, my midsection is not my favorite area of my body on the best of days. But more importantly, I’m not sure that someone like myself, nearing (gasp!) 34 years of age needs to be baring anything even close to my belly, unless I’m in a beach/pool type setting.

Unless, that is, I suddenly become Gwen Stefani overnight.

Sure, they look cool on the models. What doesn’t? But I don’t think I’ve worn a half shirt since the 80s and I’m thinking I never need to again. I’ll leave it to the rock stars and the supermodels.

What about you?

Actually yes. I wouldn't wear something as short as the Brian Reyes or Alexander Wang tops, but with the right high-waisted bottom (or on the perfect no-bloat day), a swingy, feminine crop top can be adorable. I've been in love with this Dawn Sharp top at Bona Drag all summer http://bonadrag.com/shopmain/tops/crossback.html?reload

I would never bare my belly, but if you layer a long tank underneath a cropped top it can actually look really cute.

yes definitely! a crop top that shows the space beneath your breasts to the top of your belly button is a good look. but i think the bottom half of your mid-drift is better left to be shown at the gym or on the beach.

I'm so bummed this look is coming back. Crop tops may work on a tall frame, but I'm reminded of the baby tee era when at 13 I could never find a shirt to cover my midriff. And I'm older and taller now w/no desire to show my tummy (or ribs for that matter). I could probably pass it off, but seriously, I don't want to go there!!

LOVING this 80's trend... As long as worn with either a high-waisted below-the-knee skirt or trouser can look very chic. Short with short can look hmm degrade your style. I would maybe not rock a bra per se yet showing a little bit of skin is quite cool. Think Michael Kors Spring 2010: http://www.what2wearwhere.com/blog/post/2009/09/18/-NY-Fashion-Week-Spring-2010-Pt-2.aspx

no way. I weigh 100 pounds, 5'2" tall but I'd never show off my midriff. And I've never owned a bikini...maybe I'd wear something Balenciaga FW 2009-styled, showing a BIT of skin but I will NOT show my belly! I've never found that part of the body to be beautiful.
