People Are Talking

Are You In or Are You Out?

betafashionscreenshot.jpgWe all (you guys included, of course) have a million opinions about clothing, be it on the runway, the red carpet, or the streets of our cities.

But as much as critiques may be heard by designers, at the end of the day they’re not necessarily part of the decision-making process in terms of what gets produced.

A new company called Beta Fashion that just launched in the UK is taking a different approach. Designers can submit their work and it is then judged not only by the company’s pros but also the reader community on the site. Chosen pieces are then produced and sold.

Founder Joseph Nigoghossian, a Central Saint Martins grad, tells the Independent that he wants the company to be a “leading creative force in the industry, challenging the very way fashion is conceptualized, created, and consumed.”

What do you guys think? Can it work? Should it work?

With the right promotion this is a great idea. They'll have to get a large enough audience to make it financially viable, but Threadless did it with t-shirts, maybe they can be the ones to do it with dresses and other clothing.

Agree with "Signature9". Personally I feel this is a fantastic idea and wish them all the best. What better way to contribute something innovative to the fashion industry? I'm definitely IN!

ustrendy has been doing this for at least a year...it's not exactly a new idea.

Definitely IN too. What a great way for up and coming designers to showcase their work and for buyers to get the chance to wear something original. It will hopefully be a win/win situation as long as the audience is large enough to allow it to get lots of promotion and financial support. Love the idea of competitions, as this will mean there's always new, innovative stuff online. If Threadless can do it with T shirts, then there's so much more opportunity here. Wishing betafashion all very the best of luck with their site.
