Explain

Let It Go, LA. Please.

hollywood-sign-from-rooftop.jpgDear Los Angeles,

You know I love you. I do. I miss living in your sunny confines sometimes, though my heart has always resided firmly in New York.

But, seriously, you’ve got to stop trying to make Fashion Week happen. It’s not going to happen. We’ve questioned your motives on this front before and we won’t stop until you wise up.

To be honest, I thought we were done with this mess when IMG and the Factor brothers finally dissolved that poorly attended (and mouthful to say) Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. I was wrong, and here’s the schedule. I know, it’s simply blowing your mind, right?

Here’s the thing: I know that Los Angeles has something to contribute to fashion. But this isn’t the way to do it. The big names designing from the west coast aren’t even involved and I haven’t heard of a single editor making the trip. If people are cutting down on the number of senior staffers they send to Europe, do you really think they’re making extra room in the budget for this? And any good celebrity publicist in town has long since told his/her clients to stay away from the event due to the reputation it has earned. I mean, would you want your A or even B-list actress plopped down next to Jenna Jameson in the front row? I think not.

Granted, things are new this year, from the venues to the organizers, but I will never think this is a good idea. You tried. For Years. Stop.

I say, stick to having a fabulous market week, where as a in-house publicist for an LA designer, I did have lots of market editors from NYC into the showroom. And your buyers all come in that week too. Heck, if you have the funds throw a chic dinner party at the Chateau or Il Sole while they’re all in town. Invite your celeb and stylist friends and garner some good press.

Because all this money being spent on an event that actually lowers your cred just doesn’t make any sense to me. And I truly say this with love.

That is all for now.

Agreed. And other 'emerging' fashion weeks can take a lesson from it too. Quick - stop this epidemic before places likes New Jersey insist on having their own Fashion Week too!

LA Fashion Week should disappear, and take that Lindsay Lohan mess for Ungaro with it. That collection was not even worthy of being shown in LA. Sad irony... But much like Rick Owens says 'get off your ass and go to Paris.' If you're that serious about Fashion you will.

To be honest, nothing will replace the big fashion weeks... but I don't really think they're aiming for that. LA Fashion Week is an opportunity for a lot of young, emerging designers who can't afford (or aren't ready for) New York/Paris/London to show their talent and possibly get noticed by buyers and editors. It may not be Vogue, but every little bit helps.

I knew a very wealthy art collector who used to buy work from unknown artists just so they would be able to go home to their parents/friends and say they sold something. Same idea.

We should support young talent, not look down on it because it's not in a traditional "fashion" city. Every effort to draw attention to artistic talent (especially in a suffering retail market!) should be applauded.

While I agree that LA "Fashion" week is well... BAD that doesn't mean there should NEVER be another one, I think they should wait and figure out how to make it better before putting on a new one. The Fashion sun does NOT rise and fall in NYC so the elitist folks need to get over themselves, there are stylish fashionable people everywhere I just happened to think they are in the SF Bay Area but like you I'm biased. BTW there are celebs at all fashion shows now (okay not d list but still celebs).

As an LA native and a passionate lover of all things fashion I can't say that I dont see where you are coming from. I agree LA is full of trashy celebrities and people who think because they have money they automatically have fashion sense. I blame Ed Hardy and the like. How unfortunate for the young talented designers here who actually have something to offer, but may not have the time/money/resources/etc to get themselves to a more "respectable" fashion week.

Ps. Once upon a time France was the only place in the world respected for their wine and Californians were laughed at for attempting to create something that they had "mastered"...what would the world be like without Napa?

No way, Napa is gorgeous. I totally agree about the LA fashion week, it's as relevant as Toronto Fashion Week. No wait, Toronto is to Canada what NY is to USA, only to a far lesser degree.

not sure about napa.........

Stop comparing Los Angeles to NYC! They are not the same places at all, with even more polar people! I agree that LA Fashion week is nothing to be proud of, but please Fashionista, use your worldly awareness for good instead of elitist city-snarking.

I've seen what CFW has to dish out. Nothing fabulous. I didn't say TFW was great either, but at least it's the fashion capital of a country.

What are SF and Chicago on the list?

I don't see anything wrong with fashion weeks happening in different cities. Fashion happens everywhere around the world, who said it has to be confined to New York, Paris, and London?
Fashion week is a great place for new designers to show what they have and learn from others. I'm not saying that every city should have a fashion week and that every one will be successful, but just because they don't have a massive budget or draw in big fashion names doesn't mean they aren't any good.

I see you have fully and quickly adopted the self-centered, elitist New York attitude... Congrats! I wasn't aware that the sole purpose of hosting a fashion week was to have fancy NEW YORK editors and super-special A-LIST celebrities come to it.
Considering that NYC fashion week recently featured an Ann Taylor fashion show and has famous-for-being-famous people like Lauren Conrad and some of the Real Housewives of New York in their front rows, I'm not so sure I'd be so quick to judge the LA fashion week if I was in your position.
In a global economy where fashion shows are being broadcast over the internet, New York is quickly losing its exclusive claim to being the Center of the Universe... and this post shows it loud and clear.

I may be the only one saying this but I reside in Phoenix, Arizona where we just wrapped "our" Fashion Week. Next month Scottsdale is having their Fashion Week and I am PROUD to be a part of it! I know those of you who live on the East Coast think that L.A. should just drop their fashion week, but do you think it is that east for any small time designer to just pack up and afford a show in NYC? This is how many young up and coming designers get their start. Granted many that do make it, move to NYC eventually. The same goes for here in Arizona. No, we are not a fashion oriented city..even close for that matter, but 30 of my friends are local designers and love where they live so much that they stay in this city where there are no manufacturers or markets for their clothing.. I think it is admirable for these young designers to stay true to themselves and their friends by NOT moving to NYC right away. It is the whole "big fish, little pond vs. little fish, big pond" argument, and honestly think that that NONE of us smaller, less fashion-minded cities should rid ourselves of our Fashion Weeks. They are fun and bring art out of the homes of the artists and into the eyes of us NOT as "lucky" as most of you to live in such a large, polluted (in many ways), fashion-minded city. Leave LA alone and for sure leave Phx/Scottsdale alone!

Thanks!

I'm actually VERY excited to see what LA does this year. Sure it's a different market, but there is a lot of worthwhile talent. Without IMG/Smashbox, last seasons new venues hosted some GREAT shows and parties. A lot of really creative venues have stepped to the plate with a really fresh perspective outside of the usual runway format.

I agree with the folks above -- NY is nothing to brag about this year. I've personally heard positive buzz about LA from editors this year -- even IF everyone is simply too burnt out to attend, it seems like people are looking here for something new.

I'll admit, the timing of LAFW is an actual a problem, and so are the "models". Things are also a little unorganized because of the transition, so that lineup you posted does NOT include some major events/designers that just got announced.

So let's please support our industry right now instead of knocking it before you've even given these new venues a CHANCE to showcase? A lot of serious talent has come from LA. It may be a different market, but everyone starts somewhere as I'm sure you did too.

I really don't see the "love" this is coming from. I know it's "cool" for east coasters to rag on LA, but the least you could do is REPORT after you've actually peeped the presentations. I hope, given Fashionista's reach, you guys don't just turn a blind eye. Serious question given the assumptions you've made: will you consider a retraction if you DO see something you like? ;)

WWD, Racked, and LA mag took a more journalist approach with their LA pieces, worth reading:
