Fashion Is Fun

10 Questions for Project Runway

In the worst season of the show ever, we finally know who’s showing (or sorry, already showed) at Bryant Park…last February. And now, on to the questions:

1. Seriously, Michael’s not involved in choosing who’s going to Fashion Week? No offense to Cynthia Rowley, who was lovely, but that’s just infuriating. Lifetime, please realize you cannot film this show in LA and still have it be relevant.

2. Cindy! Um, what’s your secret and how do you still look that damn amazing? Can we please get the number of your derm? Thanks much.

3. Mayor Villaraigosa, don’t you have a budget crisis to deal with? Also, if you think Los Angeles is the “creative capital of the nation” and “leading the way in fashion”, we cordially invite you to visit New York. Bring on the hate, west coast, we can take it.

4. Did anyone else think this Getty challenge would have been better suited for an early round where we could have seen a wider range of viewpoints? It really is one of the most culturally sound places in LA (and the views are ridiculous), making it the perfect place to get an early glimpse into everyone’s vision.

5. How on was Tim tonight? Between the “giant Scandinavian rabbit” and the “panel of puckering”, I was in pithy Gunn heaven.

6. Althea, ever think about spending as much time on your dress construction as you do that hairstyle construction?

7. Who wants to see Nina’s stilettos shoot off her feet in joy? We do, we do!

8. Am I the only one who still tears up when they tell contestants (even mediocre ones) they’re going to Fashion Week?

9. How bad must that accessories wall be? Holy crap were those shoes bad. And not just the mess Irina put on her model’s feet which made the judges wince.

10. Are you scared to see what these three create for Fash Week? I wasn’t around Bryant Park last February so I haven’t seen a thing…but methinks it’s not going to be pretty.

Seriously the worst season ever. Irina's designs are pretty but I haven't seen any of them do anything new or interesting and is it me or do all of Althea's tight skirt, loose tank looks just scream Proenza Spring 2007?

first of all, i live in LA and was kind of appalled that mayor villaraigosa would take time out of his day to do project runway, no matter how small the part was. we have a lot of effed up s going on out here, and as much as i love PJ, i'd rather it not be on my mayor's list of priorities.

and i cringed when he said LA was "leading the way in fashion." i was just imagining what you all and those over at the cut would say about that. culturally, LA is very fashion forward but i mean come on, everyone knows new york is the fashion capital of this nation. that said, we have yall whooped in the creative capital department. between the number of musicians, authors, screenwriters, actors, artists, directors, cinematographers, photographers, composers...sorry, we own it. the entertainment industry is all creative and it's all here, save broadway. and even they move out here for the sunshine. sorry loves.

betsy, quite a few authors, artists, musicians, and actors reside in nyc. you cannot definitively assert that la is more creative than nyc. yes, the film industry is there, but hollywood is not the epicenter of the art scene. so no need to apologize since what you're saying is categorically untrue. and even if it were, i would never give up ny to move out to la. never.

That show fucking blows. I can't believe I wasted another hour of my life watching such drivel. There isn't ONE single contestant that shows an ounce of creativity. I've seen all that crap before. Nothings new or innovative. Nothing has made me stop and say "gee, I wanna wear that!" It's all crap. Lifetime crap. L.A. crap. I'm from L.A. and even I know the fashion scene over there is one big joke. SIGH.

It's lame that my mayor was on PR last night when this city is so f-ed up, but since he's a total media whore, I was not at all surprised. He loves being in front of the camera, and would like to keep PR in LA. I hope it stays in New York after it goes back. I love my city but New York is the fashion capital of this country, and Nina and Michael being too busy to fly out to LA constantly with their demanding careers is understandable. Not a lot of foresight went into that decision. I guess they thought it freshened the show but they failed. And Cindy looked even better on TV than in photos - dang.

The vast majority of the "hate" I've heard is coming from new yorkers aimed at the west coast. On the west coast, the attitude is much more live and let live. I don't understand how this certain class of new yorkers can simultaneously be so sure of their
superiority and so incredibly sensitive and defensive about it. Like the really pretty girl who has to criticize anyone else who's at all attractive. (Echoes of Meana Irina?) New York's a great city, but there are other great cities too.

And what the heck does "culturally sound" mean?

Completely agree with #8. I'm an L.A. native & work as a designer. Even I thought that filming in L.A. was a bad idea. God knows I love L.A., but when it comes to fashion & inspiration in the U.S., it's all about New York. Personally, I haven't watched it in 2 years. I feel it's run its course.

if, in the end, they just need to get fabric and make clothes, I don't see a huge difference in where it is filmed. i think living in new york makes boring people think theyre fabulous so they have to play it up as much as possible.

i agree with 11. it has nothing to do with la - the challenges and designers are horrible. the most entertaining thing is watching nina hold back looks of utter disgust. i hope she is brutal on the finale. someone has to do it.. most boring season EVER

thank goodness Christopher didn't make it to Bryant Park. His designs were pretty awful and though he seemed kind of sweet, he was also just plain annoying as hell and borderline delusional about his ability and vision. And his constant weeping was ridiculous.

So glad to know that someone else STILL tears up, too! (Even if the season wasn't too great.)

lalala is right. You'd expect Abby, a professional writer, to know better! Unless she is British - is she? As a professional editor of both US and UK content, I know that Abby is punctuating in UK style here, not US style.
