B for Beauty

Gaga Nails It

The interwebs are all abuzz today with the release of Lady Gaga’s new video for “Bad Romance.” She’s the ultimate crossover as every music, celeb, and fashion site is fairly obsessed with its arrival.

As expected the styling is ridiculously awesome. The S/S10 McQueen is killer (as is the Lady’s ability to walk in those shoes.) And it’s totally creepy and gorgeous all at the same time. I’ve already watched it three times and can’t imagine getting sick of it anytime soon.

In honor of Gaga’s new gig as a beauty spokesperson, I’ll point you to my favorite non-clothing related styling choice in the video: the barbed wire-like nails. While they’re not exactly practical for every day life, you (or rather your manicurist) could create something nifty like this for a holiday party.

P.S. How weirdly cartoon-y were they able to make her eyes in some of those shots? I felt like I was watching Roger Rabbit!

is it just me or does every gaga song sound like a slightly remixed version of another one of her songs?

The clothing and style are fab but why do all her songs sound like bad b sides of Cher's "Do You Believe in Love"? Terrible.

Help me get all the designers in this clip: graffiti Burberry trench, McQueen claw shoes... what else?

Her choreography sucks. That stupid signature claw thing with the shaking hands move is annoying. It looks like she choreographed it herself. And I'm still not buying her fashion sense. She definitely didn't do the McQueen SS10 looks justice. How could she wear that paired with a bunch of recycled looks that she has been wearing all year long. Her looks don't tell a story, she just packs in all the trends she can in one video to come off as a style icon. Even the male extras were wearing the metal face armor thats been done in so many editorials. I really want to like her but she just looks kind of dorky when she tries too hard.

In some parts of the video she looks like that Chris Crocker guy that cried about Britney on youtube. She isn't very attractive but she makes it work with all the costumes and masks.

How dare she use McQueen SS10 in her "music video ad" for Bose and Nemiroff Vodka. Oh yeah and ipod speakers?....really Gaga?
Plus she really should stick to one thing; Haus of Gaga or the real designers. I think Haus of Gaga I think couture knock off. Whats up with the tacky bling get up. I was so excited when she wipped out the first pair of McQueen platforms in that bath tub then it all went down hill. She totally ruined that finale look.

ATTENTION:

Gaga makes good POP music. Hear that music snobs? Pop. She writes her own material, is killer on the piano and has a great idiosyncratic voice. Gaga is the best thing to happen to the genre in a very, very long time and anyone who knows music knows that much.

thank you, abby, for keeping it positive and promoting someone who relentlessly supports fashion in all it's awe-inspiring spectacle.

"bad romance" is stunning. when is the last time anyone was actually excited about a music video?

haters get back.

@14; I know McQueen premiered her song at his show. That's actually when I really started to become a fan of hers. I just feel that the video didn't live up to the clothes. Her "aesthetic" seems all over the place. One second she an S&M vampire with a massive spine then all of a sudden she looks like a Lil' Kim wannabe dripping in diamonds. I guess I just don't get her.

ATTENTION
gaga acts like she's making music that will forever impact the world, not just "good pop music" and she may write her own material, but its nothing new. its all been done by the many pop tarts who came before her. anyone who knows music knows that.

and i know plenty of people who were excited about music videos before this. single laides? that had alot of people talking. go to ew.com and you will see a heated discussion about kris allen's new video.
gaga is doing nothing new. 5 years from now she will be nowhere to be found and there will be a new avant garde pop artist who is the best thig to happen to a genre, who is changing the game, who brings it to a new level blah blah blah. she is far too gimmcky to last.

Nothing in music is "new" anymore. yep, not even single ladies (does Fosse ring a bell?). and that hype came after it was released, not before.

So many haters right now.

I doubt we would see McQueen's looks presented in such an artistic way.

I love how she ties in all her looks from just going out and puts them in her video like that. I'm a fan.

The song does sound like a remix, but I love Gaga, and I could listen to her all day.

Music videos have gone down hill. But I see Lady Gaga bringing them back. Single Ladies just had dancing, but this video has an actual story. And amazing styling.

I like Gaga well enough -- I'm not really a pop music fan, but I appreciate that she puts in a serious visual effort, and respect that she writes her own music.

But could we please retire the word "haters"? This is not MySpace and I'll assume the people using it here are not twelve. People are allowed to disagree with the idea that [new artist] is the most fabulous thing since [legendary artist] without being hATerZZzZzz OMfG!!!1!!

Many thanks,

i don't think gaga is going away any time soon. if people like rihanna and britney can survive with very little talent beyond looking hot, i'm not too worried about someone who can turn out hit after hit while creating substantial buzz for themselves both in music and fashion. other popstars right now should be ashamed at how much they suck in comparison.

Nicola Formichetti's styling does not translate well on music videos. I totally forgot they work together because she looks so cheap here. So is he part of her Haus of Gaga? That's pretty lame if he is. Also if he isn't too because the way she brands her shit it seems as if all her clothes are done by her.

@9; I guess that explains the face armor. Plus I have to agree with you on the McQueen numbers. It was such an incredible collection and she brought it down so much.

She is so pretentious. There's an interview of her on Nicola's blog where she's playing like she's shocked guys think she's sexy. "I feel like I'm changing the way what guys think is sexy". She's always trying to give her self credit fir changing the world. She knows damn well she's sexy or she wouldn't be walking around dressed like a cheap prostitute.

To everyone who thinks she's original... she's not. If you look closely, most all pop artist have started to gravitate towards high fashion. Ciara wore the Thierry Mulger robot looking suit in her video way before Gaga ("Go Girl").

no #27, no.

no one here has provided a thoughtful opinion on why they dislike gaga or her video. Saying her music "sucks", that the video is "terrible", and that gaga looks like "chris crocker" is not an expression of dissimilar taste, it's hate. And anyone spewing hate should be prepared for a reaction.

Gaga will continue succeeding regardless of anyone's opinion. I'm attacking YOU because your comment was senseless and took the discussion on an arbitrary tangent.

I suppose it was your supreme maturity that led you back to this page to retort when an anonymous person told you to calm down...

I'm batshit crazy and immature, absolutely, but at least I own it. hater.

#30, Even if she's not my type of music, Gaga is great (as I've already said twice). I just greatly dislike the reductiveness of the term "hater," as do most grown-ass adults.

I still think it is unnecessary to attack me -- and calling me a hater too, now? who the hell am I hating exactly, people who use the term "hater"? that's too meta for me to process at this hour of the day.

But as I really have no dog in this fight and didn't intend to add to your irritation ... peace.

nevertheless, hater is not hard to comprehend, and I clearly called you one sarcastically.

mull over it for the next few hours of your day.

Jac, I think she looks really thin in some of the shots in which she is supposed to look alien-esque. I think she looks really fit but not emaciated.

I also think that Lady Gaga is something of a modern day Sex Pistols, in that her entire image is much more important than her music, which, like the Sex Pistols, isn't very good, and serves as more of a social commentary than anything else. Take her self-important "I'm changing the world" attitude. It's not unlike lots of other celebrities (Angelina Jolie, anyone?), but I think it's meant to be a critique of people like Angelina rather than serious statement.

i think she is very different from the sex pistols. they were radical for their time and they carried with them a sense rebellion against their current society and music corp. Lady gaga's image is not groundbreaking at all. Sure ppl can style her is outragous clothing but all it says is "hey everyone look at me! look how unique i'm being! aren't i so cool?" Pure self promotion
I also think that she is very different from angelina jolie. Angelina jolie i think cares about the people who have less whereas lagy gaga's goal is again self promotion

Excuse me but who is not all about self-promotion these days? If you are a CELEBRITY or some one in the PUBLIC EYE, that is something that is necessary to stay current. And I have to disagree with you about GaGa. She is a true artist - I have not seen any artist in recent memory who has made such epic music videos, combined "fashion installations" with literally everything she puts her mark on, constantly reinventing her look thanks to her own Haus... I can go on and on and on. Most of you were too young to remember that even Madonna received a lot of criticism for her dancing and singing abilities when she came on the scene. It takes time for full acceptance and GaGa pretty much has that down.
