On Friday night, at Indochine’s 25th Birthday Party, we kept saying, these are like the fashion parties we read about before we moved to New York, part of the reason we wanted to move to New York, to see if things like this really happened.
Practically naked (though elaborately head-dressed) women waited on booths full of people like Willem Dafoe, Narciso Rodgriguez and Iman; Mr. Mickey wore a sequined tux jacket while Glenn O’Brien opted for velvet; Naomi Watts wore a striped tee and Martin Cohn, Elise Overland’s SS10 closer, rocked beige Nicholas Kirkwood for Rodarte heels; there were hats and lace and jewels and feathered bras with jeweled underwear.
Meanwhile, a Chinese dragon wove its way through the crowd behind drums and dancers and strippers took to the four poles set up in a downstairs cave. Most people didn’t know the extra space existed, another declared, “I haven’t been down here since the 10th Anniversary!”
If you’re feeling nostalgic for the banana wallpaper and don’t want to wait another ten years, we’d suggest checking out the book.
