We’re So Vain

giselevainnewyorkcity.jpgWe probably think this post is about us…and in a lot of ways it is.

According to a report compiled by TotalBeauty.com, New York is the vainest city in the US. The study examined data like plastic surgeon to population ratios, number of personal care businesses (salons, day spas, etc.) and money spent on beauty upkeep.

Fact: New Yorkers spend nearly 60 million (yes, six. zero.) dollars on trying to make ourselves prettier each year. And there are more than three times the amount of salons et. al in NYC than any other city, and that includes Los Angeles.

These stats got me thinking:

—Do we New Yorkers feel pressure to be pretty because models and all-around beautiful people can be found at every turn? (Agyness Deyn is always at my am coffee spot. Yes, it makes me feel less than lithe and lovely early in the morning.)

—Do we shell out more for how we look because houses and yards often aren’t on the can-do investment list?

—Do the dollars-spent numbers take into consideration price of services and cost of living? Because it’s obviously a lot more expensive to get your hair colored in the city versus, say, San Diego.

—And should we be embarrassed that our city spends this much money on pampering?

I always credit living in NYC with teaching me how to wear heels (and even run in them if necessary). When people ask why I respond "With all the models walking around, you've got to try every trick up your sleeve".

I'm pretty shocked NY was chosen over LA. Was this report based out of LA? Maybe that's why? Ha.

- NYC has more than twice the population of the next most populated city (LA) in America. 8.36 million vs 3.83 million

- That site you linked, Totalbeauty, says people in LA spent nearly $50 million on beauty products. So really, they spent way more per person in LA than NYC

- From personal perception, LA has to be a vainer place than NYC. I bet that site didn't add tanning salons to the spending. That would put LA way way over the top. lol

I believe vanity is not the right term to describe us New Yorkers.

We are simply, aesthetes.

People are always quick to point out how superficial things and people can be. But they never dwell on why so many of us humans are concerned with these so called "superficial" things.

Culture? Survival? Highlighting the individual in the collective, or viceversa? the civilized animal in all of us?

^ Are you well? You took something so uninspiring and turned it into something philosophical...

to answer the questions: yes, yes, no, and no.

New York is where everything is amplified. It's like the nerve of America's most expansive aspirations. It only makes sense that those numbers are staggering here.

Oh boo hoo. Criticize LA yet again to make yourselves feel superior. Truly, truly vain.

I agree with #5. We simply see and appreciate beauty. It's not vain but a lifestyle.

I will #8 - not because I'm vain but because it's the right thing to do. :)

(7 zeros, darling)

I wonder if the figures come from personal use or professional use. Do they separate the two?

Major magazines hire serious skill (and sometimes, not) to work their editorials. Ad agencies hire serious skill (and sometimes, not) to work their campaigns.

LA might have some major firms as well but to the extent of NY?

Some comparisons just don't work. Like holding an apple (hehe) to an orange...

Just keep doing what you're doing NY, it's why we love you. :)

You sure it is just *60* million dollars? Because dividing by say 3 million women, that is 20 dollars a year, which is frankly very little almost anywhere. Divided by 8 million people, even less...
