“My gut feeling is that fashion has stopped being so elitist. People have learnt that fashion can be a multimillion-pound business, and with that you have to have a certain approachability. That ivory tower of the designer in Paris definitely seems to have dissipated.” —Katie Grand to the Times UK

Well when you’re Katie Grand maybe. But I think most of the industry, especially publishing is pretty elite.

Maybe fashion’s inspirations and/or infatuations (e.g. street style, the Tavi phenomenon) have become much broader, but as for the industry itself…not so much. Populism is only skin deep.

As a person on the outside looking in, I still feel as if fashion is very elitist. Mario Testino snubbing Tommy Ton at the Dolce & Gabbana show, girls like Vanessa Traina enjoying success for having well connected, rich parents, and we shouldn’t even begin to talk about Vogue. For a long time, the Fashion Industry was only accessible to those who could afford it. With the internet, it has become easier to access the world of Fashion, but when you actually look at who the Fashion Industry tends to celebrate, and who advances within the industry, they tend to become clones of one another.

There should be a definite distinction made between fashion as a business and fashion as an enclave of the fashionistas. The former requires an element of approachability and mainstream acceptance, the latter thrives on seeking the unique, ivory-tower, one-of-a-kind, only-recognized-by-those-in-the-know kind of product.

4 knocked this one out of the ball park. I never read Vogue because I don’t give a flying shit about all the debutante bullshit they endorse. I’m sick of seeing people featured only because they’ve been born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Sure I love my hard earned luxury, but I rarely see myself reflected in the pages of many magazines and that’s why I only read a select few.

Uh, no Katie Grand, fashion is still very much elitist. In fact, I believe it is one of the reasons why “high fashion” is being replaced by “fast fahion”…because while one patronizes the plebes, the other capitalizes on the plebes.

unless the current crop of fashion editors and designers and photographers and all their children are some how magically wiped out, then fashion will always be elitist. elitism is too ingrained into the minds of these people for it to just suddenly make a turn around.

The entire article is actually much better than the Grand extract you girls have made (you champion her a wee bit much if you ask me), specifically the bottom line in which the author states that a career in styling isn’t as glamorous as blogs like this , or tv shows like the hills will have you believe…

I think fashion is definitely still elitist. The only thing that’s changed is the definition of “elite”. Gone are the gilded salons of Balenciaga and Vionnet, but last time I checked, there was still plenty of attitude. Plus ça change…..
