Adventures in Copyright, People Are Talking
An Ironically Parallel Universe
By Abby Gardner
When Rachel Zoe launched The Zoe Report, one of the first things we noticed was the “Parallel Universe” section and we wondered how some of her designer friends might feel about her promoting knock-offs of their work.
Today’s featured item is this silk and velvet satin Proenza dress which Rachel writes “moves her to tears.” Granted its price, $2300, moves us to tears.
But what really caught our eye was the “alternate” selection, this Erin Wasson x RVCA number which may not be an exact copy, but still…
Given her past indiscretions, like this and this, you really think the designer would start double checking her ‘inspirations’.

Erin Wasson is not a designer. She has zero talent.

So, now using the same fabric and sleeve length amounts to copying? The neckline, color, accents, shoulders and hem line are completely different. Dear lord ladies, I know these copyright rants usually give you good hits, but this accusation is ludicrous.
Maybe that is a knock-off in some parallel universe (hah!), but in this one they are barely similar. In fact, personal feelings for Wasson aside, isn’t this the kind of thing that fashion is all about? On trend, but with no likelihood of confusion and really just a rehash of something that was popular 15 years ago (for the Wasson dress… which I highly doubt was even distantly inspired by the proenza dress, although it could be a copy of someone’s high school winter formal dress from 1996)
The real question is, did topshop copy Erin, or did Erin copy Topshop?

i find it funny that an aic post hasn’t been made yet about christian louboutin’s cage boots that are strikingly similar to ysl…
is it because they cost more than steve madden and nine west?
I find that Parallel Universe section a little insulting. I love the idea but it feels kind of like shes insinuating that people who arent given all these designer dresses, or can’t afford to buy them, live in a different world.
It’s a purple minidress. Hardly a copyright issue here.
Go fuck yourselves fashionista. Seriously. How can you not see how ridiculous you sound?!?!?!?
If anything, Parallel Universive items should be the MAIN pick of the day! How many people can afford a 2000 dress?!?!?! Talk about different planet…
I’ve officially had enough of your vapid bullshit comments on this “issue”. Get real.
seriously? i love you guys, but you are really reaching this time.
Okay, I’m going to keep this short and simple:
Abby, read your post again. Discover what a trend is, reread your post.
Please don’t write things like this again.
The people behind TZR seem to know what they’re doing. Rachel still seems to have her job and designer friends.
I love everything else, but when it comes to AIC and related posts, I just can’t…
The think the previous copy catting linked to the brief are more of an issue than this dress. Whether this dress is original or not doesn’t erase that it looks like she’s gaining a copy-cat rep.
Um? at first I thought you were refering to the silouette of the two outfits (which initself, does NOT constitute ripoff since its very basic) but even the silouette is not even the same. one clings around the legs, the other doesn’t… the necklines, the fabric, the pattern, even the formality of the two are different (i mean seriously, silk vs velvet? its basically the difference between dancing at a glamerous ball and visiting the local mall).
needless to say…I’m disapointed in this one.
