Desperate Scent Strips?

Tuesday, Dec 22, 2009 / 3:45 PM

eva-longoria.jpgEveryone who reads what I write on this site probably knows a couple of things about me by now: I used to be a beauty editor and I have a wicked pop culture obsession.
You also know that I am often irked by celebrity fragrances. Now, I realize the big business implications of fragrance and therefore understand why a company would sign someone like Beyoncé to a major deal. While I may not wear the perfume, I do see the market.
Paris Hilton, not so much. Eva Longoria Parker, even less so. Yep, she’s the newest actress to “create” a scent for the masses. Eva by Eva Longoria will launch this spring, according to WWD.
Really? Are there that many Desperate Housewives fans still out there? This actually would have more sense like three years ago. The woman’s never even been in a hit film. She doesn’t seem to have a lifestyle image that is ripe for selling.
Sorry if that sounds like sour grapes, but in an economy like this one, I just don’t understand major deals with questionably marketable talent. That is all.

No, she hasn’t been in a hit movie and her character on Desperate Housewives isn’t exactly a role model, but she’s a beautiful woman that a lot of people look up to.

I agree, Abbie. Eva is so boring and says such dumb things in interviews. Also, after seeing pictures of her without makeup, it’s impossible for me to think of her as pretty. She looked like a drowned rat.

Sorry, meant Abby, not Abbie.

I completely agree with Abby. Personally my hatred lies in Victoria Beckham’s perfumes… just how many lines can they come up with? distinct, sensual, intimate – IT ALL SOUNDS THE SAME!!
sorry if anyone is a fan.

I live in Texas and she is very popular because she is married to basketball superstar Tony Parker. This perfume will be huge in San Antonio!

Also, what about people who loathe Desperate Housewives? I mean, I actually like some of the Beckham’s perfumes, but I’d never buy them in case someone asked me what I was wearing. Ditto Paris, Mariah etc.

Abby, I completely agree. And speaking of Victoria Beckham…does anyone else here think that she is the most overrated style icon in, like…ever?

When I lived in France two years ago, Tony Parker was huuuuuge there. So maybe she has a market in Europe?

Tian – yes thank you! She’s the most overstyled try hard of the decade! I can’t believe her label is actually still going whilst credible designers are going bankrupt. She is the epitomy of what’s wrong with fashion today.

these perfume deals have huge profit margins for everyone. she’s pretty, she’s well known, and she’s hugely popular in the latino community. a lot of people would rather smell like eva longoria parker than kate moss. you have to realize that you really don’t have the most mainstream tastes… after all, how many super-fashiony things that you love are abject failures at making a profit, while ostensibly “tacky” things like steve madden shoes and forever twenty-one are hugely profitable?

tian- victoria is extremely overrated, but i think sienna miller is worse. why vogue endorses that woman as some huge stylish trendsetter…

I agree with guest commenter #10. There is obviously a whole consumer market out there besides those who read blogs such as this and follow high fashion seriously. It is also important to keep in mind, as other commenters have said, that she is very well-liked in the Latino world, popular in Texas because of her husband, and thought fondly of for her charity work.
To Modesta, I wouldn’t exactly equate Eva Longoria Parker launching a perfume with all that is wrong with the fashion world.
I also disagree with those who said that they wouldn’t buy a perfume based on who makes it because they wouldn’t want to have to say who said it. I buy a perfume if I like how it smells, I owned a J.Lo perfume a few years back that I absolutely loved.

Bottom line is,if it is not french its most likely not wearing. The bottle industries key parfum artisans are the ones who deserve the spot light and the right to create and distribute. Most of these celeb named brands are tacky and insulting. I was hoping that at the very least the recession would force class taste and talent to make a comeback.

abby- the fact that you note there is a big market for these celebrity endorsed fragrances makes your post so dumb. whether or not you, your friends, or random strangers you come across care about desperate housewives is beside the point. if there wasn’t a large base still following it, do you really think ABC would keep it on the air? furthermore, she’s on every A-list and those trashy gossip mags never have a bad thing to say about her. sorry she is not bouncing around in Steven McQueen SS2010 but, seriously? why did you even post this…
i hate to be the bitch, but I find the majority of your posts immature and poorly articulated.. kind of like I’m listening to a self-absorbed teenage girl rant about something irrelevant and ultimately stupid. sorry, but this is just a dumb one..

Abby,
I have to say that your post sound as if you live in a bubble. Look around you, the world is changing and I’m sorry if Eva Longoria is not what you consider a “beauty poster child” What is obvious here is that they are targeting Latinos and DH fans (which still brings in about 20 million! viewers) in response to “who watches DH anyways” She def. has a ripe enough “lifestyle image” for many Latinos. Besides J.Lo I can’t think of any other fragrance promoted by a Latina. And who says you need a hot film in order to promote a perfume? Paris H def. did not have a hit of any kind.
Maybe Eva doesn’t dress in your standards, but she def. is not in the “what were they thinking list”
You need to step outside and really look around when walking NYC streets and notice the diversity around you, and not just what is fed to you by the non-diverse fashion and beauty industry
