Chanel laid off 200 employees at the end of 2008 and Fendi’s yet to address the recession, but Karl Lagerfeld’s eponymous label’s started cutting back.
Beth Shapiro, the Director of Global Marketing and Public Relations for Lagerfeld, is leaving the company this Friday, January 15th.
Her email started out with, “the current environment has forced us to downsize.”
Shapiro was the go-to person for US press, handling sample requests and tickets to Lagerfeld’s show in Paris. Jess Movold will handle the former and no word on the latter.
Guess there’s not a huge demand for iPod holding fur motorcycle helmets and leather sun dresses.

I hate to say it because some of his designs truly are wow factors, but Lagerfeld’s line has never been successful. First it was Lagerfeld Gallery now Karl Lagerfeld. I think he should stick to Chanel and Fendi. I don’t think there are any plans for expansion in the near future. It’s sort of like Azzedine Alaia. He sets his own rules but he is respected because of his designs and talent.

In this industry, the work goes to whoever gets the job done! Apparently, Jess Movold has more of what it takes than Beth Shapiro, no matter what her background. Waiting tables to high fashion… Well done Jess!

AshNicole, I have to say that I totally agree with you. Jess sounds great for this position. Just becasue she was a waitress through college does not give her any set backs. Seroiusly, what did you do to make money when you were young?! Congrats Jess Movold! Your fam must be so proud! :)
