Would You Wear

The Nagging Lingerie Question

Friday, Jan 22, 2010 / 1:23 PM

louise goldin and lingerie.jpgThis question’s about as old as black and blue, but it is almost spring.
Sure, underwear as outerwear rears its head every March, but for SS10 it was, arguably, the most prevalent trend, in part because if lingerie wasn’t featured on the top of an outfit, it was visible underneath all the sheer.
The other day, WhoWhatWear suggested layering bright bras under sheer sweaters a la Emma Roberts and this morning, Vogue UK‘s Sarah Harris champions the look; she suggests Araks, Marks & Spencer and Stella McCartney bras.
This weekend, I tried it out. I wore the black and blue Sonia Rykiel for H&M bodysuit with a pair of baggy boyfriend jeans — it kind of felt like what I wanted to dress like in the late 90s (if I wasn’t 13). I probably should have tested the look at some fashion related party where I’d still be the most boring instead of a local West Village bar. Regardless, I felt naked.
And yet I have a feeling that this is the year in which everyone actually does wear lingerie. Will you?

I loved that Louise Golden look and for the most part I liked the trend, but it definitely is hard to pull off. Wearing a bright bra under a sheer shirt is nice though, I’d definitely do that.

I am planning to wear lingerie, under my clothes. I think it’s weird that now so much runway stuff is seen as directly translatable instead of being runway like it used to. Lingerie should be simply hinted at , a peek or flash here, maybe.
You seriously wore that by itself with jeans ?? I have it in pink. It will be nice under my dress but by itself would be a lot of exposure.

I love wearing sheer babydolls under a cropped cardigan with just the top peaking out.

I think lingerie inspired clothing (a la Rodarte for Target) is too much. Lingerie is meant for your bedroom, a private place in my book. It’s so much sexier when it’s revealed behind closed doors with someone or even just yourself. It makes me feel sexy when only I know I’m wearing a hot bra and underwear. Showing it in public is just trying too hard to be sexy.

I think if done in the right way, this trend can be very sexy and sophisticated. The night I met my husband, I was wearing a black blazer with nothing but a black bra underneath and a huge D&G; rhinestone necklace that covered most of my chest. He was smitten from that moment on.
The trick is to show as little skin as possible. I like the idea of the cropped cardigan over a babydoll… I will have to try that one out.
However, I may be partial to this trend because I design lingerie for a living. :)
