My Brunch with Sarah Jessica Parker

Monday, Feb 22, 2010 / 2:45 PM GMT -4

Last weekend, I smacked myself out of my post-fashion week meets post-midterm week daze and hurried over to Sweetie Pie on Greenwich Ave for a brunch hosted by Elle‘s fabulous creative director Joe Zee and NYC’s Fashion Laureate: Sarah Jessica Parker.

While the purpose of the brunch was to discuss the launch of SJP’s newest fragrance, SJP NYC, inspired by Carrie Bradshaw, the environment lent itself to relaxed girl talk rather than a serious business breakfast.

Before SJP arrived I found myself the odd-girl-out in a room of women on the verge of fainting at the mention of her. Don’t get me wrong, I love SJP as much as the next girl, but I’ve never seen a group of people this excited to meet a celebrity.

Well, except for the time I sat next to a tween at the Christian Siriano show and she nearly cried.

Perhaps it’s because I almost entirely missed the Sex and the City fad; I wasn’t allowed to watch it until I was eighteen and by then the series was long-over. Regardless, I can say SJP is probably the coolest, most down to earth celeb I’ve ever met, and definitely the funniest.

She talked about her fragrance (which smells really wonderful), but also her beauty routine (au naturale) and Twitter (she thinks it’s changing people’s attention spans). As the beauty editors tried to pry answers out of SJP, I realized that she is just a normal woman, not some otherworldly fashion faun. Everything discussed–her kids, her busy schedule, her job–where things everyday women talk about. She didn’t sit there naming designers left and right, but instead chatted about her constant search for a good mascara and her ineptitude of applying lipstick.

The event culminated with group pictures with SJP, like the ones you take at Disney with Minnie Mouse when you’re five, and some women reacted with more panic than said five-year olds.

But the best part? Twenty minutes after SJP’s departure for an “imporant event” I got an unsolicited text from a friend saying, “OMG I just spotted SJP eating at Chipotle on 8th St.!!” That’s how I knew SJP was probably the coolest celeb in New York, and potentially the world. If you need further proof, just watch the above video.

^I agree. I just love her down to earth nature. She could easily be the most vain woman in Hollywood etc..but instead, she's just a sweetheart. Everything I've ever read about her or any interview with her I've ever seen or read lends the notion that she's just 100% committed to her role in the industry (whether it's Carrie, her Bitten clothing line or fragrances) and so pleasant to deal with. I love SATC and i love her as Carrie but knowing that she's who she is day-to-day makes me love the series and all its blockbuster glory, even more :)
This video was fun to watch and i loved that it was with Joe Zee–another fashion favourite who's also got his feet planted on the ground, it seems.

She seems sweet, but she says “Right” so many times when Joe Zee's talking that I got a bit twitchy.

I so miss Joe Zee's Vitals magazine – I thought it was far better than most of the American fashion mags that are out there now.

Thats awesome that you were able to do that! She does seem very down to earth, which I think will really help the launch of her new perfume. I know her first launch was very successful and did a great deal of business!

It is refreshing to hear about kind, genuine human beings that happen to have celebrity status. SJP i s an inspiration as a fashion icon, but also as the ultimate independent, happy woman who loves her family and job. Her style is so popular (partially) because she is truly an “It-girl”, she has the life everyone wants, but she enjoys it rather than wasting it away. She is the picture of health and loving life, and her style reflects that wonderfully.
