Burberry’s Shearling Bonanza
By Britt Aboutaleb
I don’t need to tell you about the clothes at Burberry–you probably saw them this morning.
I don’t need to go on about Mary Kate Olsen and Kristen Stewart. Or that I think it’s silly Anna Wintour flew to London for a single collection and I can’t tell you about the dog in the front row because I couldn’t see around the paparazzi.
But I do need to gush about the clothes.
Store windows may be filling up with spring clothes, but I’m desperate to get my hands on shearling. The army green coat with ivory shearling spilling out the sides and sleeves–with brown leather straps and gold buckles going every which way–was brilliant. I’ll wear thigh high anything, but especially python boots with dainty gold buckles, and if those don’t go into production the shearling buckled booties will work.
We’ll ignore the velvet parade, and jump to the last few looks in which Christopher Bailey piled every kind of fur or hair onto a single coat or into a leather bomber for a cozy explosion of jackets that prompted Mary Kate to remove her sunglasses for a closer look.
I’d even wear velvet, if it meant I could wear Bailey’s boots and coats.

Shearling is fur. You realize the animals must be skinned, right?
stop ignoring the velvet! it's clearly here to stay and ignoring it only keeps you from providing a detailed and fair commentary on each show in its totality. it's a bummer you don't like the fabric, but these pieces shouldn't be dismissed solely based on that.
that being said, agreed that the shearling is unreal.
Willing to wear velvet. Coming from you, that should be the highest form of flattery for M. Bailey!
MK totes never took off her glasses. I was sitting right across from her
This blog has gotten quite fur crazy – since when did this happen? I'm not a PETA freak, but I'm certainly not a fan of furs either. In a time where people are (seemingly) trying to be more ethically and environmentally conscious, it's very strange and ridiculous to see this much fur down the recent runways.
So was I! Sitting across from MK that is (& up a few rows). She took them off for about a minute towards the end, pointed to something and spoke to her boyfriend before putting them back on. You can probably see it in the video…
Thanks for pointing out that furs are losing their taboo. It seems to be spontaneous, and it's probably a good thing. I mean, leather bomber jackets have never lost their esprit, and, uh, leather also comes from animals.
yeah, fur, shearling, and leather: not cool. not environmentally cool, not ethically cool. just not cool.

Just cause Sarah Mower liked it doesn't mean everyone has to.
Someone is eating the meat that the shearling is coming from! Not everyone is a Vegetarian.
I figured, since shearling is sheep, that it would have been sheered from them. Am I incorrect in this thinking?
What really grossed me out was the ponyhair coat.
Shearling requires the pelt, ie the skin. The animals have to be slaughtered.
So everyone wearing UGG boots is basically wearing fur.
It seems like the shearling thing has been looked over in the debate about fur.
There is a difference between wearing leather or shearling vs. wearing other furs like mink, fox, etc. If people eat cow, it only makes sense to use the skin for leather. But to kill other animals solely for their furs is another story. It is unacceptable, unless you live in a freezing climate with limited options.
and to clarify – I do not eat meat or wear leather.
Actually Shearling is lamb and people eat lots of lamb. And just to let you know I do not eat meat either.
Go to Viet Nam, China and see what they eat. I see that on TV and get sick. Can't Watch It.
I'm sorry that the Chinese and Vietnamese are not able to afford to eat the ideal food that you're used to.
When my family lived in a refugee camp in Indonesia, food was scarce and the men had to go out everyday and find food in the jungle or in the sea. I remember eating black sea SLUGS. It grossed the hell out of me but you know what, we would've died from starvation.
So, before you judge, look at the big fucking picture.

Sorry that you read my comment wrong. I was commenting to someone who was a vegeterian and they hated to see the skins into clothes and that we should not kill animal for clothes and I told them that lamb is eaten and not killed just for food. That is when I told her that like other parts of the world have different diets, and like you there is many places in this world that struggle to find food.
I myself think every person on earth should be able to have a good diet and not be hungry.
Thank You!
Animals are killed not only for skins but at the same time the meat is eaten.
I myself do not eat meat but am not against people killing animals to survive.
This is their daily diet.
This blog has gone mental.. sly comments about MK who gives 2 if she took her sunnies off or not! who's a vegeterian and who's not, or about the starvation across the world! surely its about fashion?! and this IS what is it and its not going to change anytime soon! its a beautiful collection fur or no fur! Animals are cute but they make even cuter coats!
isabel marant has copied this jacket you posted. it's shameful!
