She calls them belt bags, but regardless, Donna Karan doesn’t get why people carry handbags when they could sport a much more comfortable leather belt with pockets. (We actually kind of agree with her. Plus, the one she wears its pretty chic. See image for proof.)

Some other nuggets from the legendary designer’s conversation with FIT’s Valerie Steele at Parsons last night:

On Education: While she dropped out of Parsons to work at Anne Klein, Karan believe that education is “a gift.” That’s why she’s been working with the school for the last two years to creating a fashion design MFA program.

On Trends: Of course, most of what Karan wears–and designs–is trendless. But she can’t believe people are still buying sequined cashmere.

On Fashion Design in the US: “I don’t think the market is shrinking, I think it’s changing.” Karan encourages young designers to take a more holistic approach to their work.

On the Out-of-Whack Fashion Cycle: Not only does the designer think that clothes should be shipped in-season so that consumers become less-accustomed to buying on sale, she also wishes that the fashion industry/media would be more tight-lipped about the collections before they hit the stores. “I don’t want the consumer to see next week what they’re not going to be able to buy for six months,” said Karan. “We’re killing our own industry.”

On Uniforms. She loves them. Particularly those of Tibetan monks.
