SandraBullock.jpgThe WSJ had an interesting story in its Thursday style column about which stars actually prompt shoppers to buy clothes.

StyleSpot.com, a Los Angeles-based Web site that links red-carpet photos to e-commerce boutiques that sell the clothes–or something similar–told the journal that Sandra Bullock generates the most click-throughs. Kate Hudson and Drew Barrymore also top the list.

As for the one thing users are clamoring for, Jessica Alba’s Burberry Prorsum knotted platform sandals at the People’s Choice Awards have proved the most popular accessory of the season.

We think Ms. Bullock is lovely–and that she’s never look better than in Alexander McQueen at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this past January–but when we think of the celebrities that we take style cues from, the list goes something more like: Sofia Coppola, Sofia Cofola, Sofia Coppola….

Do you agree with StyleSpot’s readers? Are there any celebrities that you get style inspiration from?

Diane Kruger!!! Icon.
And I love Alexa Chung’s style but I wouldn’t wear anything she wears. Does that make sense?

I’m sorry, but this item sounds a bit pretentious. Do you really think the majority of the American public even knows who Sofia Coppola is? Sandra Bullock, Kate Hudson, and Drew Barrymore are “likeable” and accessible. I just don’t get the feigned shock at Sofia Coppola’s omission.

check your subject/verb agreement in this post and the post on Donna Karen!
:))

oh god and look now I’ve made an error . . . i mean donna KARAN. oh the beauties of proofreading!!!!

This post illustrates the difference between Fashion women and women who just want to look pretty.

You mean fashion “cues,” not fashion “queues.” And yes, I was surprised by Sandra Bullock, too, though also surprised you’d think the average woman would want to look like Sofia. I like the way Sofia looks in flat with dresses but it makes me feel stumpy.

I TOTALLY agree with the Sofia Coppola. Who else would there be?

sandra is enjoyable and familiar and average. this all makes perfect sense.
but i still haven’t forgiven cameron diaz for ugg boots, so even if i thought the average celebrity had any sense of original style (which i do not) then they wouldn’t have a chance.

I agree with guest #2. So your fashion pets Sevigny, Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, and Sofia Coppola aren’t on here so you have to get all snooty about it. Sevigny is fug most of the time and most normal people agree with that. Most women just want to wear great clothes they look good in and not be avant garde just for itks own sake. Unless your dressing to impress gay men, which is what I guess this is what it is all about anyway.

I think you are forgetting that the vast majority of Americans aren’t built like most “high fashion” dressers, and that those looks don’t appeal to everyone. Also, Sofia Coppola for inspiration? Anyone can figure out short hair, a dress, and flats. Woohoo.
This was also about celebrities who prompt the most Americans to actually buy stuff, so it makes sense that the list is topped by actresses who appeal to the general public and not fashionistas.

guest #9 what does itks mean? I agree with you completely though.

Okay, guys, calm down. Lauren’s not being snooty, it’s always a little surprising when someone has a different viewpoint than what you’re used to. I mean, I completely agree with Peter.
#2- Kate Hudson and Drew Barrymore are accessible? I’d say looking like Sofia Copolla (maintenance wise, not build) is much more accessible than looking like Drew Barrymore.
#9- Everyone’s fug once in a while. The chintzy mess Sandra wore to the Golden Globes? Just because Chloe Sevigny doesn’t the fit the Anne Hathaway-esque mould, doesn’t mean she’s not a fashion inspiration for many of us.
And I’m sorry, but some of us don’t dress for “guys”. Some of us dress the way we want to just to feel good and express ourselves? And no, it’s not about “impressing gay men”.
What is up with that statement?

Guys, I am not saying that I think Sofia Coppola should top this particular list. However, I still don’t get why Sandra Bullock does. Cameron, Kate, Drew I totally get. But Sandra? She’s adorable and lovable but rarely, rarely dressed well. I’m not talking about what brands she wears–I’m talking about the way it’s been styled and the fact that it usually looks ugly. Think about it. Would you click through to buy that Bottega dress she wore to the Globes? Regardless of whether you love her or hate her, the answer is probably no.

No, I concede that I’ve never been wowed by how Sandy B dresses. I guess I was just a little peeved because the one thing that often bothers me about coming over here is the same list of “fashion endorsed” celebrities and the refusal to deviate from that. For example, I, along with many other people I know, thought Christina Applegate looked amazing and was easily one of the best dressed at the SAGs. But would she ever get mentioned on here (or on style.com, or any of these type of sites)? No, because she is not part of that little fashion clique of Alexa Chung/Emma Watson/Sevigny, who are pals of certain editors who decide these things. It’s just something that annoys me, not only here, to be totally fair, but in the fashion press in general. I hate to say that I actually prefer the entertainment press’s review of the best dressed, because they, for the most part, just go by what they liked that evening, and don’t play that kind of favoritism (ie most slammed Diane Kruger’s pepto bismol Lacroix, and rightly so imo. But not here, and not on style, and not on FWD, where she was deemed best dressed, naturally, because she is one of your “people.”) Hope this makes sense.

I will never understand why people come to this site and complain about the writers/readers being interested in people who make interesting sartorial choices. It’s. A. Fashion. Website.

I feel that Sandra Bullock’s style is often underrated. I haven’t seen many “street style” shots of her but I feel like she finds a good middle-ground on the red carpet: wearing (what I think are) more glamourous and interesting dresses than the usual strapless or one-shoulder gown but not totally avant-garde.
