Adventures in Copyright: Zara’s Pleather Version of Celine’s Spring Skirt
By Lauren Sherman
When we first saw this a-line skirt on the racks of Zara during New York Fashion Week, we let out a cynical chuckle.
Phoebe Philo‘s tempting to copy–her aesthetic currently drives fashion–and her leather trimmed skirt for Celine is a spring standout.
But with Zara’s abundant cheap-and-chic wares, was it necessary for the retailer to fully rip her off?
We obviously don’t think so.

this skirt is completely different. the contrast leather is on the top not the bottom, the waistband is not set in, and the pockets are verticle. ZARA exists to allow people to get a similar look to the high end designer labels without actually paying for it, which includes leaving out quality. do you think Phoebe Philo cares that Zara kind-of copied a style she did last season in a cheaper fabric and uglier style? no. nor do any other designers worth their label name, because it happens all the time, and she's designing something so much better now. AND she knows her customer isnt going to leave her for zara because, well, celine rocks. the khaki skirt with pockets is a BASIC, and im pretty sure i saw something similar to both of those skirts in the windows of JCPenneys a few years back..
hmmm I like the zara one more….why is everyone ruled by this copy-paste movement?visit my blog http://www.iscariotteh.wordpress.com
yeah it's different. I believe enough has been changed on it.
I´m in love with this colecction, but its so “reproducible”
I agree. Besides the obvious color similarities, the skirts are quite different in style. I don't think it's necessarily a “copycat” move just to have a similar-looking item of clothing.
I am pretty sure celine would not loose any sales because of Zara's similar designs. It is most probable that more people wants to “show of” wearing “originals”…
I never have time to comment, just look, but now I'm pissed. Celine was my favorite collection last season… How the HELL can Zara keep doing this? LVMH must be able to do something, didn't they just sue e-bay for millions for selling their products? Can't they handle a company copying their products?
You're kidding, right?
what do you think I'm kidding about?
NIKE and MIKE are two very similar looking words. notice though, there are differences, therefore NOT copyright infringement. besides, garments can’t be copyrighted. and im sure YSL or HALSTON made that exact skirt in the 1970′s. its a basic. khaki. skirt. with leather bound pockets.
yes, it is a great skirt, especially within the context of the rest of her collection. but this is not an original, Nor is the “copy” an exact replica.
so its a joke, right?
they are both so boring; its stunning anyone would want to copy that. why bother.besides, people who shop at Zara aren't going to buy Celine anyway. They are at Zara because they can't afford Celine. and when they can't afford Zara, they are at F21.
Pointless post.
