An Ode to Clueless
By Kate Kaunitz
I am not one to adequately analyze a movie, but I can tell you this about Clueless: Almost everyone who has seen the cult classic falls in love with it.
In the most recent issue of Vanity Fair, another cult favorite—designer Alexander Wang—said Clueless was his favorite movie (along with Mean Girls). Well, the movie provided more than just entertainment for designer; perhaps it was also a source of inspiration for his most recent collection.
Though Wang already credited Wall Street as his main influence, the grunge office-wear seemed better suited for an urban campus than the workplace, with its matching backpacks and velvet pants. Yes, AW10 has sent us back to the ’90s—pleated mini skirts, knee socks, plaid prints, pinstripes and velvet have dominated the fall runways.
We first noticed the schoolgirl trend in pre-fall collections. Proenza Schouler showed collared shirtdresses à la Cher, pleated plaid pants and varsity jackets. While the latter may not scream Clueless, the next example definitely does.
Remember when Britt posted this story about Miu Miu? The similarities are astounding, though we have yet to see whether Miuccia will continue in the same vein for fall. The Proenza boys, on the other hand, definitely did—upping the sex factor with lots of leather, mini skirts and thigh highs.
In Milan, Prada and Jil Sander showed markings of a Clueless influence with knee socks and tartan textiles aplenty. Our stylish friends at Refinery29 are also feeling the effects of a Clueless revival; they posted this yesterday afternoon.
As Lauren says, “It’s safe to declare AW10 the season of Clueless.” There’s really no denying it, is there?

An amazing film… Oh the many hours my friend and I spent (spend?!) lamenting about the fact that we wish we could have a wardrobe that's rigged up the the computer like hers…
