My household isn’t getting an iPad until the end of the month; my boyfriend “needs” his contraption to have 3G capability, so we’re sitting out this round. But regardless, I’m trying to get excited about this thing by checking out all the cool, useful applications I’ll be able to enjoy, like the one that lets you read Interview for just 99 cents.
Another app that proves promising is Gilt Groupe‘s shopping app, which I got to preview on Wednesday. The folks at Gilt are really proud of this thing, and I can understand why:
It’s intuitive. The thing that I love about my iPhone is that it’s touch-enabled, so I can zoom in on something or zoom out by just pinching the screen. What’s cooler about the iPad is that it’s big, which means when I’m shopping for a dress on Gilt’s iPad app, I can zoom in so closely that it almost feels like the piece is actually right in front of me. And you can grab and drag items into your shopping cart, so there’s not a ton of moving around form screen to screen.
It reminds me of a catalog. I love catalogs–I order everything online, but I still love flicking through them. Now, I can sit on the couch and flick through Gilt’s offerings each Saturday, much like I do with the J.Crew catalog.
It looks good. The resolution on the iPad screen is so brilliant that Gilt says it’s the best of three devices the e-tailer operates on. (The other two–pretty obviously–are a computer and iPhone.)
So now I’m kind of excited for our iPad, if only to use the Gilt app (along with select others). And just an FYI: Gilt’s giving a $10 credit to the first 10,000 people who download the Gilt Groupe iPad app. (One catch: You have to be new to Gilt Groupe to qualify. If you’re already signed up for an account via the Web site, you won’t receive the $10 credit.)
