Torn by Ronny Kobo's probably best known for its slouchy printed t-shirts and teeny tiny bandage skirts.
If you don't know the name, you've seen it on everyone from Rihanna to Daphne Guinness. But Ronny's building her trendy t-shirt line into a full-fledged clothing collection for fall.
She's added coats and leather jackets, and remember her wolf shirt? We asked about it---alongside some more serious questions---and learned she's really embracing the animal theme for fall.
Why did you decide to shift gears after being so successful with your t-shirts?
I felt like it! It’s something that I really wanted for our customer. I always knew that it was in store for myself and Torn, it was just a matter of when and what. We needed the right time to introduce the right product. I also thought that the t-shirts were always reliable and exciting to our customers, but this spring felt like the right time to offer the same confidence to our customers in dresses, jackets, pants, and tops.
What's been the hardest part about flushing out a whole collection?
I hate to say that it wasn't hard at all---it was a totally natural and fluid process. It's been my dream to be work with interesting fabric and turn my ideas into reality. I've been making clothing for friends and for myself for years, so putting it all together was so fun and inspiring.
What was your starting point for the new pieces?
My sister! She's a designer for the CFDA award-winning jewlery line Ruby Kobo. She's effortlessly cool and fashionable. Her key accessory's 'comfort' so she was my 'muse' for this collection!
What inspired your wolf shirt? Do you wish Zach Galifianakis had worn yours in The Hangover?
That's a funny question!! And one of my favorites!! Yes, I do wish he wore anything of mine in that movie, but the wolves would been ideal!! I was inspired by the original Three Wolf T-shirt which is a popular image amongst all wolf t-shirt collectors, which were originally produced by the Mountain T-shirt company, who I've collaborated with for fall. We're creating more outdoors-y animal type t-shirts for September.
ed. note: I've seen The Hangover about ten times now, and only when I searched for an image of Galifianakis to link in this story did I realize he's not actually wearing a wolf shirt, but an image of a human head howling at the moon. Oops.
What's your favorite thing from the new collection?
The pleated dress in grey erosion. We developed the print; it was inspired by my science class which I actually loathed. But the images of the cells we used to research stuck in my mind. I love the mini pleats down the front of the dress.
What's been your career highlight so far?
Just seeing so many fashionable girls wearing Torn and interpreting it in their own way. I guess my favorite was seeing Daphne Guinness in my sequin blazer from the last holiday collection! It's such a high.
