A Very Special Street Style: Isle of Wight Festival Edition

LONDON--Over the weekend, 55,000 people flocked to England's Isle of Wight for its annual 3-day music festival. Storms on Thursday night meant that the mud seemed knee-high by the time the festival kicked off, but it couldn't stop Florence and the Machine, Vampire Weekend, Paloma Faith and Jay-Z from mesmerizing the crowds all weekend long. Attendees kept festival fashions distinctly British, with acres of denim, over-sized floral prints, white-gray hair, vintage pieces, headbands, and obligatory Hunter boots. As for the mud? The better to make your wellies look more authentic, my dear.... Click through for images of--and interviews with--some of our favorite (civilian) concert-goers.

How did you get involved in the festival? I've done work experience for the past few years, and I just keep coming back.

What's been the highlight of the festival for you so far? Jay-Z. Easy. Jay-Z and Kanye, it was amazing. I love Devendra Banhart, and I think the Strokes are going to be great too.

What's the wildest thing you've seen or heard backstage? Nothing, actually. It's really quite dull.

Really? Well, who would you most like to meet backstage? If Jay-Z were still here... him! What are you wearing? A jumpsuit/onesie from Bershka, I picked up this little woolen waistcoat from a fancy dress shop for £3, and my shoes--my high tops--I picked up from New York for $20.

Name: Annika Caswell (I was eating dinner, but chased her across the field)

Age: 33

From: London

Occupation: I'm a bespoke tailor.

What brings you to the festival? I'm here with my friend Cassie, the beauty editor with Marie Claire magazine. We're hiding backstage.

What's it like back there? Just a slightly nicer, closer, more civilized view of the stage, without being jumped all over. We're having quite a peaceful time.

Which acts have you most enjoyed? I really enjoyed Paloma Faith. She's an old friend of an old friend of mine.

She was incredible. You could tell she was enjoying every moment. She's really a lovely girl and a wonderful performer.

Tell me about your outfit: These are very old, decrepit Hunter wellies from when I used to horse ride. The dress is on a long-term loan from the National Youth Theatre. It's a vintage piece from the early 40s. The cardigan is a horrendous, holey, horrible cardigan that I have made a big mess of.

I'm intrigued by the long-term loan.... I used to be the wardrobe mistress there, so I borrowed it.

A-ha. And do you usually do your hair in this style? Always.

How are you finding the campsite? Pretty grim.

What's your best camping tip? Bring a camper-van!
