Rumor has it that MTV has canceled (seemingly) successful scripted reality series The City. The current season, which airs on Tuesdays at 10.30pm EST, will be its last.
The City, a spin-off of the The Hills, which was a spin-off of Laguna Beach, documents the “life” of Whitney Port, a young designer trying to make it in New York. It mostly takes place at real-life fashion industry companies, including Kelly Cutrone‘s public relations firm People’s Revolution and Elle magazine, where main characters Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo “work.” (Kaplan does indeed work full time at Elle, Palermo does not.)
In general, we’re a bit surprised by this news.
The City seems genuinely popular, and even if it doesn’t pull in ratings equivalent to those of The Hills (which is also ending this season), it’s much buzzier. For a brand like MTV, it seems like it’d be worth sacrificing some ratings for press.
But we guess that’s not the case in this circumstance. We’re also guessing that, Palermo, who has become a celebrity outside of her work on The City, is “over” the show, as is Whitney Port, who is very serious about her fashion career, even if the rest of the world isn’t.

It's good that she's serious about it rather than half-heartedly just putting her name to something like other reality TV stars and I do think she has a modicum of style and talent…quite shocked that MTV would cancel this so I agree it must be beause Olivia and Whit don't want to do it anymore
Either way, I screamed when I read that…LOOOOOOOL!!! And the really sad part is Whitney is such a sweetheart. I feel bad for her, at times. But everyone is NOT a fashion designer!!!
I would watch (and love) a show just about Erin and her work at Elle. I fast-forward the dvr through the non-Kelly parts with Whitney.
IDK why they wouldn't want to…I mean, I can see Olivia not wanting to do it anymore because her real-life circle of friends told her that it's destroying her image. But Whitney is actually getting some great exposure from all of this. I'd never have known about (not that I really care about it either way) Whitney Eve prior to The City. Why are you interested in her line, if you don't mind my asking, Sharon?

This makes me happy because as much as I love Elle and Peoples Rev, I find this show to be absolutely unhealthy for everyone! The people on it, the viewers and its a false look into our industry.
Wonder what Jesse and Dan of MTV Canada's The Aftershow are going to talk about now….since The Hills and The City are now over….They have regular Aftershow programming during the week at 7:30 but I'm pretty sure that segment was a spin-off of their The Hills and The City Aftershow success.
The City never caught on ratingswise. They moved it behind The Hills to help ratings and it didn't work. I thought it was weird that the Hills would be cancelled when its rating have always been higher than The City.Elle and Olivia will survive. Whitney's fashion career will take the biggest hit. She has no education or training in fashion design and it shows in her collection. So far her entire “successful” career has been a facade manufactured by MTV. they got her a job at DVF which mysteriously ended, spots at NY fashion week, got Elle magazine to promote her clothes and got her into Miami fashion week, got her into the CFDA awards. Without the help from MTV it will be interesting to see how she promotes her line.
Well, there isn't really much more to explore so I'm not surprised. I'm not interested in seeing Whitney try to hock her lame-ass line and unless Olivia and Erin do a cage match to the death, I'm over their petty rivalry. Although, let's take bets: who would win in a Palermo/Kaplan cage fight? My money's on Erin. Her bitch face doesn't lie. She's got some serious anger deep in there. Although, it wouldn't surprise me in Olivia fights dirty and pulls out a Swarovski crystal encrusted switch blade out of her chignon.

Whitney's really nice, but I have gotten so tired of her “expressions”, they're not there! She'll say she's happy, sad, upset, excited but it's a small grin and a small frown. It confuses me so much. She can't make it as an actress fo sho, that script can't carry the whole show on its own!As for Olivia, Elle only keeps her for the exposure. She doesn't do anything and keeps getting away with it, Joe Zee is using Olivia and she's using him. It's actually making Joe look stupid, he keeps ignoring it and says okay, don't do that next time – let's talk about tomorrow. I *hope* you can maaaybe do an interview with someone important since you say you're connected? Please Olivia? I really need results, you and Erin have to work, I know you can do something Olivia. I've always wondered what the hell Olivia's doing at her computer since she isn't…doing anything. I feel bad for Erin, she obviously works hard and knows what she's doing but her fashion style is kinda plain, girl I thought you worked for a fashion magazine!

I hope MTV reconsiders because I love Whitney and Erin, Olivia Palermo doesn't bother me much. They need to give it another chance and make Lauren Conrad make some guess appearances. It would increase viewership for sure.
I would also love a show like that…Erin and Kelly are the reasons to watch. They have *actual* personalities, are successful and are hard workers in an industry there is huge interest in among the target demographic. Enough of these shows about bimbos lunching, staring blankly and um, like, ok, yeah…whatever. I want to see the real dirt, blood, sweat and tears. God knows there's enough of it without having to make up some crappy 'script'.
I didn't know so many people were actually into the show like this. people are going crazy. I hope it's true for their sake- getting the upset for nothing. I'm surprised it lasted this long. how much budget do they need?

This rumor is gaining a lot of momentum. Kelly just posted on her Facebook that if it is true, she will wear pink for a week.And Lauren is right, MTV may “cook” something like this up for press. I guess we will find out soon.
MTV is not cancelling The City. They said the rumor is false.
I can't stand Olivia. Of course she does not work at Elle! I scan the magazine credits page and I do not see her name anywhere. Although I do see Erin's name. Her style is great, but it is not as great as Giovanna Battaglia.
I hope they lose Olivia and keep The CIty on.
