I wear a lot of gray and black–a lot of gray sweatshirts in particular.
And there’s one as of late–an Alex Wang Spring 2010 number–that I’ve had my eye on. So I was super excited to find it on sale at Aloha Rag, one of the best boutiques in the city (and online).
It originally retailed for $350 and is currently marked down to $245.
Now, I’ve examined this puppy in person, and along with a kind-of-sexy crisscross back, it’s lined in a silky fabric, which feels very luxurious.
But as big a spender as I am, I can’t bring myself to buy it. I just can’t justify $245 for a gray sweatshirt (even if it is worth that much in fabric, design and labor, which I’m confident this one is.)
So I’d love to know: How much would you pay for a gray sweatshirt?

Hey Shermy – if it's from Target – $15 dollars max. A designer one I might spring for $50. But $245? Girl you're better off buying a small gold nugget in case Manhattan goes up in flames.
$100. I love grey jersey too, but there has to be some point where the markups have to stop. It is getting so stupid, especially if the fabric content is something other than a version of wool, cotton or silk(at least for me).
if it's amazing $125. i just spent $50 on a tee shirt (ok, it's that marc by marc jacobs “you can change your spots one” and i thought it was profound but still – it's a tee shirt). by the way, lauren, you rock! i'm so glad you're in charge now!
OMG, I just bought that same Marc by Marc Jacobs Tee too!! I thought it was cute and “profound” and clever as well, so yeah, I had to splurge a bit, but otherwise I wouldnt pay that much for just a regular tee shirt or a grey sweatshirt, even though grey is like my fave color!
Since Thom Browne was bought out by Cross Company his prices have dramatically gone down. I got a grey sweatshirt (now made in Canada) for $220 (retail).
I probably wouldn't pay $245 either, even for great quality, but if your cut off is $15-50 you can't be considering the quality of fabrics and conditions of labor. Is it worth having a cheap sweater made of unsustainable fabrics that has been produced by abused workers?
40 bucks and only if it's done in a nice luxurious fabric. I hate the way the inside of a sweatshirt starts off nice and soft but then after a few washes it gets all balled up and crappy, so no regular cotton one for me.
I guess it depends on whether you have a sensitive skin or not. I bought one in Stradivarius that was 4 euros (5 and something $) and it´s the best money I´ve ever spend.
$125, but only because I'm picky about not supporting overseas sweatshop labor, and non-sustainable fibers. If I didn't care about that, though, I'd just go to Target and get one for $15 and never pay a cent more! But I don't buy a lot of clothes…
CPW (cost per wear). I think you should get it, its not a boring jumper its got the styled back and it would make you feel great each wear. Otherwise do you get Bonds in america? because they have really cute jumpers for $30 where the front is pretty much the same as Wang's
If you can think of a long list of things that make THIS specific sweatshirt different from the others and you really think you'll wear it a lot, go for it. Personally, I have trouble justifying anything over $120 (except shoes, handbags, and high-quality jewelry).
xx
If I could afford $245 gray sweat shirt, I still wouldn't buy it. That's just too expensive even for a top quality shirt to invest in. I always think of clothes when buying them as an investment. A piece of clothing that can be added to my wardrobe that I can keep for many seasons to come and still work it. So I wouldn't mind spending a big buck for a piece of clothing but I think 245 bucks for a plain gray sweatshirt is a little hight, when I know I could get a good quality sweat that looks the same for cheaper. Yes, maybe $100-$125, that's not bad. It's just a branding thing when shit is that expensive. Xo
Good on you. Many people pretend as though awareness is a luxury for people who can afford to be aware.
Unfortunately, it kind of is. I can't afford to spend $125 on a grey sweatshirt. I try to shop ethically when I can, but sometimes it's just out of my price range. If there was an option to shop somewhere with a Target/F21/H&M price point with labor/manufacture standards, I'd happily shop there.
I agree, a sense of responsibility and insistence on quality does restrict what one can have, as it should. I can't necessarily afford a $125 sweat shirt, let alone the one double it's price, but if I am in need of clothing on a budget I try to buy consignment. It's always going to be better quality than target and you might end up with a unbelievable steal.
I thinik it all depends on how many times you think you will wear it…. If you spend $245 and wear it 15 times over 1 year that's only $16 per wear… If you however only wear it 5 times, it will not be worth it and you're better off with a less expensive version…
It depends on how much you love it! Wang is always justifiable!

I agree with other comments that it depends on how much you love and how often you'll wear it…but if you think that's bad, I've been mulling over a Chanel sweatshirt that's $995! Now that's painful!!
$125, maybe try T by alexander? But if it goes below $200 I would snap it up. But I agree, if you love it go for it.
