Weird Trend from Men’s Fashion Week: Jeggings
By Leah Chernikoff
The runways for RTW Spring 2011 in Milan this past week have been littered with man-jeggings. (Neologism = meggings?) And T’s The Moment blog just confirmed it with a tweet: “Jeggings- new term coined for all the jean and trouser-like leggings and super slim, tight pants being shown here this season.”
The jegging is a risky and conflicted clothing item for most ladies. On the one hand, when done right, they’re just like skinny jeans only more comfortable (hooray for elastic waist bands!). On the other hand, they can be epically ugly and tricky to pull off.
And now, terrifyingly, men are following suit. Lauren even noticed man-jeggings at Top Shop back in January.
We’re hoping this isn’t a trend that trickles down. But we’ve seen enough too-tight skinny jean-ed ass-cracks along Bedford Ave. to know that hipsters aren’t parting with their beloved trousers anytime soon. So we’re looking at you, Williamsburg, when we say: Please, treat this trend responsibly.
Click through, at your own risk, to see man-jeggings on the runway.

They're breeches. On the right guy they might look OK.
God no. If my boyfriend came home wearing those, I'd be seriously questioning a few things! Um!
OH NO! Please don't….
ohmygod these are EVERYWHERE in new zealand stores
there are only two conditions under which these can be worn. 1) if the man has really, really skinny legs. like, model legs (which thank the lord is my best asset.) . and 2) if there is some form of top which covers the crotch area…nobody wants to see stretchy fabric clinging to a bulge for dear life, that is unless said man is at a gay club, dancing on a platform. They can be pulled off, but very, very carefully.
I just had a conversation about jeggings (for women) today with a few friends. I was the only one who stuck up for them, while everyone else thought they were just terrible in every single way. I do not like the idea of jeggings on men. ewww.
depending on the pants of course, but some things should be left to the imagination
The only ones that look like jeggings are the Versace ones. All the other pants are just skinny fit jeans or actual leggings, which isn't that new of a trend. Leggings for men have been on the runway for at least two seasons, usually paired under shorts.
As a man interested in fashion, I find nothing more progressive than exploring ones body with different styles of clothing…it's called the variety of life. For those wishing to keep “jeggings,” out of the mainstream scope of fashion, I say, stick to your straight-legged khaki's and poorly draped jeans, they are made just for you! For those of you wishing to embrace creativity, these may or may not be for you, but thank you for at least having an open mind to consider them. And btw, what's that saying about 10% vs. the 90% of the population…naysayers, thank you for helping prove such theory. *SMH*
I don't wear 'straight-legged khaki's and poorly draped jeans' and still I don't see any appeal in 'jeggings' for men. But of course if you're in touch with your feminine side, who am I to tell you not to wear them. More power to you, I suppose! :~}
A lot of the women in the UK wear these, they have trickled down to the super markets too! And are quite comfortable.
I hate to be rude, Leah, but half of the images you've referred to as 'jeggings' are in fact, surprise surprise- slim cut pants (leather motorcycle style at Burberry, twill at Varvatos, jean at the rest with possibly more poly at Versace but that's only a guess) . With the exception of the Emporio Armani pieces which were athletic pieces intended for the runway and possibly a triathlon, the silhouettes you're seeing have been on the men's runway since Slimane at Dior Homme.
Thanks Jesse – I don't think you're being rude! I was working off a broader definition of “jegging” as provided by “the moment” blog (who is in Milan right now) to include “jean and trouser-like leggings and super slim, tight pants being shown here this season.” But point taken!
There is, as you point out, a very fine line between slim cut pants and jeggings.
For some reason, the former is acceptable and the latter gets ridiculed. I'm not exactly sure which I have — they have buttons and zip-flies, but are super stretchy and made of a thinner material than jeans.
Not that this mystery matters to me much… I'm going to wear them regardless.
KD, I concur….and this is coming straight from Ian!!!
Although, I must ask…what is the saying about 10% of the population vs. 90%? I'm at a loss.
I think when you get above a certain percentage of Spandex they don't look good on anyone, regardless of your gender or physique. But slim-cut pants with a little bit of structure (and maybe a liiitttle bit of stretch) to them look great on most men.

Why is it 'weird'? Lots of guys wear skinny jeans and rock the look well. Open your mind just a slight bit. It's not like it's that big of a deal.
as long as there isn't swan lake bulge off stage, go for it
well…I actually like those….they look chic with a xtra size T or a blazer and geek glasses:P
ofcourse it depends on the body….you can't squeeze some short kinda'fat legs into jeggings….

Someone once said that Spandex is like Communism- a nice idea in theory, but once real people started using it things got real ugly real quick.
I think those leggings are a little funny looking. They're a little too tight.
The only thing ” weird ” about the fashion industry is their total anti-male agenda , the complete opposite of females' total freedom & complete confiscation of menswear as ” their own exclusive garments “;” males be damned ” !
That's just not going to fit on most men. Looks good, but not very practical.
